Book links Mafia and plot against Castro to JFK killing

By Rupert Cornwell in Washington
Published: 02 December 2005

A new book has claimed that a group of Mafia bosses was behind the assassination of John F Kennedy - and had only called off at the last moment a similar attack on the President's motorcade during a visit to Tampa, Florida, four days beforehand.

Ultimate Sacrifice, which draws on a new trove of recently declassified documents, asserts that Kennedy was plotting a coup to topple Fidel Castro, the Cuban dictator, on 1 December 1963 - a coup that would have been followed by a US military invasion of the island.

Lamar Waldron and Thom Hartmann, the authors, claim the Mafia got wind of the conspiracy and then infiltrated it, before organising Kennedy's assassination on 22 November 1963.

According to the authors, the Mob believed that the federal authorities - then led by Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the President's brother, who was allegedly running the coup plot - would not have pressed an investigation, which might have revealed the plot against Castro.

1. Doesn't make sense to me...
from the article:"But critics have pointed to problems with the book's thesis: Robert McNamara, then running the Pentagon, has said he was not informed of any new plan to invade Cuba before Kennedy's death. It is also implausible that the Mafia, itching to get rid of Castro and restore Cuba's once lucrative gambling industry, would have blocked a plot that would have done just that."

It is this last part that really doesn't make sense to me...Any one who has heard Hartmann speak on this book know if he has addressed these points?

2. foxnews says bush senior paid lee harvey oswald to do it!
they found oldgeorge's fingerprints on the cheque (made out to 'hitman oswald' can you believe?) it's too bad thom hartmann had to get involved in this, which says in effect that the jfk murder was blowback from some evil scheme the kennedy brothers were plotting, as if the bushevik media wouldn't have been trumpeting this to high heaven these last 2 generations...talk about the victim= the bad guy!

3. I agree it doesn't make sense
found this intersting:

Washington D.C. - On the 40th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the eve of the broadcast of a new documentary film on Kennedy and Castro, the National Security Archive today posted an audio tape of the President and his national security advisor, McGeorge Bundy, discussing the possibility of a secret meeting in Havana with Castro. The tape, dated only seventeen days before Kennedy was shot in Dallas, records a briefing from Bundy on Castro's invitation to a U.S. official at the United Nations, William Attwood, to come to Havana for secret talks on improving relations with Washington. The tape captures President Kennedy's approval if official U.S. involvement could be plausibly denied.

The untold story of the Kennedy-Castro effort to seek an accommodation is the subject of a new documentary film, KENNEDY AND CASTRO: THE SECRET HISTORY, broadcast on the Discovery/Times cable channel on November 25 at 8pm. The documentary film, which focuses on Ms. Howard's role as a secret intermediary in the effort toward dialogue, was based on an article -- "JFK and Castro: The Secret Quest for Accommodation" -- written by Archive Senior Analyst Peter Kornbluh in the magazine, Cigar Aficionado. Kornbluh served as consulting producer and provided key declassified documents that are highlighted in the film. "The documents show that JFK clearly wanted to change the framework of hostile U.S. relations with Cuba," according to Kornbluh. "His assassination, at the very moment this initiative was coming to fruition, leaves a major 'what if' in the ensuing history of the U.S. conflict with Cuba

6. now this adds up!
sometimes, reading a snip from something taken from academia just RINGS true, and this does...the 'Cigar Aficionado' was a professional rag devoted to anything affecting their biz, and this just rings TRUE!

4. I still don't get it but I'll keep trying to not fall asleep(?)
I downloaded Thom's show from http://www.whiterosesociety.org that discussed the book (subscription seems to be required).

The book is like 900 pages, and I think I know why. On the radio show, at least, the main author (Waldron) can't seem to GET TO THE POINT.

For FIVE times now, I put the mp3 on before I went to bed, and here's what I get before falling asleep each time:

John Kennedy inherited a plan to overthrow Castro from Nixon(!) and was planning it for December 1963.

The mafia tried to kill Kennedy twice before Dallas, where they suceeded in stopping Bobby Kennedy's hounding of the mob.

The mafia, through its contacts in the CIA who were using the mafia in backup plans to the Castro overthrow, knew of the plot to overthrow Castro.

Now, how all of that hangs together to form a conspiracy between the FBI, NSA, CIA, Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Secret Service, Dallas police, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc, the author drags out so long I keep falling asleep before he eventually (promises to) get to it.

5. Please help me - I don't get it. The Mafia would benefit by getting back
in to Cuba. Why would they infiltrate a plan to invade Cuba ostensibly to stop it since getting rid of Castro meant they could reign again in Cuba?

What is implied is that they assassinated Kennedy to stop the coup and invasion?

I should read the book before asking this question.

The logic just isn't there for me.

I believe the Mafia is probably behind the many attempts against Castro over the last 40+ years and is definitely involved in the JFK
assassintion.

I think the CIA screwed Kennedy in a couple of mega ways during his Presidency. Just as we were lied to about the support of Iraqis before Iraq War II, the CIA lied to the Kennedy's about the support of the people within Cuba to support the Bay of Pigs invasion. The support wasn't there. Kennedy was new to the job and probably trusted their 'intelligence'.

Castro knows whether there was a movement to establish relations.
I believe the CIA worked with the Mafia. The people of our country, including the Kennedy's, didn't have a clue about extent of the diabolical ways and drastic measures the ruling powers would resort to.
