Proposed Welfare Overhaul Targets Single Moms, Kids
Dec 12 - Congress is once again working to alter how the government helps the poor, intensifying a welfare overhaul underway since the 1990s. The targets, once again, are single-parent families at the margins of the economy.

The House of Representatives budget reconciliation bill, passed last month, would reauthorize the 1996 welfare-reform law by toughening Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), the country’s primary public assistance program. The bill would simultaneously force parents to spend more time working and tighten access to subsidized child care and other resources.

In its summary of the bill, the House Education and Workforce Committee commented that the goal of the heavier work requirements is "achieving independence through work." Disappointed with the current work-program participation rate of roughly 40 percent, the Committee called for "a policy of universal engagement."

1. This is fine IF
they do something to help with childcare. Otherwise, I just don't know what the hell they think they're doing.

2. The Poor must be punished
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 12:22 AM by Sandpiper
Because poverty is a moral failing.

Poor people are poor because they haven't pulled themselves up by the bootstraps or shown enough rugged individualism.

Everyone would be rich if they just worked hard enough.

And those shameless tarts who are unwed with children deserve the greatest censure of all.

8. The "war against the poor" started with Reagan, but...
Bill, to his everlasting shame, was complicit with it.

5. Yeah, never mind she was married and the husband
ran off with some waitress or babysitter. She's still a slut if she let some man do that to her.

Funny how they're raising work requirements while cutting child care access.

What do these fat fucks think these women do? Hang the kids in a closet while they're at work, just take them out as a hobby after work?

Let's see. Child care is not a self indulgent hobby. Women who are raising children have taken responsiblity, thanks, more than the sperm donor who abandoned them; and illness is not a consumer decision.

Conservatives really, really don't get it.

7. Marriage is for life
And the role of a woman is to stay home, perform her domestic duties, submit to her husband, and ignore his indiscretions.

These welfare hussies have violated the law of Jebus and need to be put in their place.

:sarcasm:

The saddest thing about these sarcastic quips is that the righties really feel that way.

9. Back to the Victorian era!
People then told themselves that laziness was the only reason for poverty, so if you couldn't survive in the larger society, you went to the workhouse, where you were fed slop and set to work at deliberately pointless jobs like smashing rocks or turning cranks that didn't do anything, after which you slept in barracks-like conditions. The idea was that if the workhouse was unpleasant enough, people would be "inspired" to go out and get jobs. Never mind that the Victorian era had its economic ups and downs and that anyone could be fired for any reason at all.

Nope, just punish poor people enough and they'll stop insisting on being poor. :sarcasm:

10. You can't have welfare unless it's corporate.
That's why you can only help families whose parents are forced to work shit jobs for unlivable wages to benefit our beloved McCorpocracy!
