UK Judge to Rule on Ports Deal, NY Times 3/1/2006, 12:01PM ET

A High Court judge in London is set to rule on Thursday whether a $6.85 billion proposed takeover of Britain's P&O by Dubai Ports World can go ahead as planned, a source close to the deal said on Wednesday.

Justice Nicholas Warren will give his verdict at 1400 GMT on Thursday, the source said.

Warren has been hearing submissions presented by U.S. ports operator Eller & Co. and two private P&O shareholders who oppose the deal for different reasons.

Lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. and London in a bid to block the takeover.

Dubai Ports World and P&O had intended to complete the transaction on Thursday. Court approval for schemes of arrangement in Britain is usually a formality.
