Self Loathing in Philadelphia
Liberals must come down off our high horses By Chuck Williams

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/editorial/14711087.htm

It took me nearly one-third of my life to come to a simple conclusion: Liberals are elitists.

Now, maybe that's not such a big deal to some, but to me it has become quite bothersome. It's pretty clear to me now that average hard-working Americans, be they red-staters or blue-staters, can smell the stench of elitist, intellectual posturing by so-called liberals and progressives.

One of the reasons why this bothers me is because I fear that it will cause us to continue to lose presidential elections.

<snip>

My opinions about all this have been influenced by working for the Democratic National Committee, regionally, and volunteering for various local elections. What I've realized is that you have two camps within the Democratic Party.

<snip>

It's no wonder folks have begun to call us effete. We sit around, legs crossed, sporting Birkenstocks, and looking down on people who don't read as much as we do.

And, when you really get down to the nitty-gritty, you realize that somehow we feel that all that carrying on makes us better human beings than everyone else. That our values and morals are better than others. This is what really annoys folks about us.

Odd editorial page today. We have the liberal self flaggelation and the other column is the conservative self effaceing.

nothing but bullshit will follow.

2. Reminds me of one of my favorite DU quotes
and I'm sorry I don't remember who posted it: "If elitist means not the dumbest motherf*cker in the room, then hell yes, I'm an elitist!" :)

I don't personally know any of the "effete" liberals Mr. Williams describes. All of the liberals I know "raise families, work very hard for a living, and spend time thinking about ways to better their quality of life." They don't read six national newspapers a day, but they do try their best to stay informed, since they understand that's a simple survival skill these days.

Yes, winning elections matters, but dumbing down to do so is unprogressive, in my opinion. Elitist that I am. :)

3. What garbage
Moral of his story: Being smart doesn't win elections.

Sure. We sure didn't elect anyone smart last time around, and look where we are now.

7. I'd hate to break it to you
"We sure didn't elect anyone smart last time around, and look where we are now."

But Kerry isn't exactly Einstein. And I shudder to think but it may be true, that Bush's IQ is probably higher than Kerry's. During the 2004 election, there was report about their grades and they were comparable. Bush managed to get comparable grades to Kerry, and that was while goofing around and being a lazy POS. Bush's problem is that he's arrogant, intellectually lazy, and has an alcoholic damaged brain.

The fact that Kerry, who was in Vietnam, actually allowed himself to be put into a position of defending his war record against the draft evading Bush, is evidence to me that Kerry isn't a brainiac.

4. "Sit around, legs crossed, ..."
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 02:08 PM by TOJ
march by the millions in protest against Smirk's illegal war, stand in cages at the RNC exercising our 1st amendment RIGHTS, do pro bono leagl work for disposessed victims, build homes for hurricane victims who were ignored by the government, trying to get the government to grant us the right to vote,...

Dear Chuck. If you spend your days looking at your Birkenstocks, that makes you elitist, yes, but definitely NOT liberal. And if you think LIBERALS are the ones who think they're more moral than others, you've been in a coma for 10 years.

What a GOP tool

5. This creep is no liberal
It's a neocon in disguise. Every piece of bullshit he spewed was right-wing talking points.

6. He's right
That's why I hope Ed Rendell runs in 2008. He is articulate, charismatic, and does not come across as an elitist.

Then we'd all get to throw snowballs at the Dallas Cowboys. We're going to lose Texas anyway, so it doesn't matter.
