Betty Bowers reviews Godless (humor)
http://www.bettybowers.com/coulter.html

This week, sweet Ann Coulter released her latest in a series of pre-rehab books, entitled Godless. Naturally, the title led me to believe that it was an unexpectedly candid autobiography. Alas, she may be saving that book until after she's been strapped to a bed at Hazelden for a month. Instead of using this book to dabble in the bracing novelty of introspection, Miss Coulter turns her two-setting mind ("off" and "off her rocker") to hector us about religion.

Let's be honest: Reading a book about religion from Ann Coulter is tantamount to reading a book about dieting from Michael Moore. After all, who wants to be lectured about not being Christian enough by an almost-50 year-old boozehound in a black leather miniskirt who has never been married? Count me as having a healthy skepticism over whether Miss Coulter has saved herself for marriage. Or anything, for that matter.

In Godless, Miss (oh, how it pains me to refer to that serially-rejected spinster as "Miss," but something Miss Coulter usually eschews -- accuracy -- compels me) Coulter turns her shrill furnace of brayed invective, fueled by a bottomless quarry of prickly psychological damage, at the most despicable people in the world. No, not the maniacal murderers who flew planes into the World Trade Center towers, but the blameless Americans who had their flesh burned off of their bodies in those buildings -- and the inconsolable spouses they left behind.

Yes, she directs an anger that shirks all management on women whose husbands were murdered on 9/11. Apparently, in Miss Coulter's religion, the meek may inherit the Earth, but not before she's had a shot at making them cry first. With a mouth so busy frothing it apparently has no time to eat, Miss Coulter claims to be livid at these opportunistic widows for being crass enough to remember the event that killed the father of their children. She also gets prickly about them being compensated as a result of the catastrophe.

<snip, and funnier than hell>

"TIP FOR READING MISS COULTER'S BOOKS: For those of you pressed for time, but still don't wish to miss out on the tedium of being regaled by one recycled thought spread out over 300-odd pages: You can finish any Coulter book in less than 15 minutes by simply skipping over the word "liberals." Try it! This time saving technique is even more effective with anything typed by Sean Hannity, who has shown the bracing resourcefulness it takes to parlay basically two thoughts into an entire career.

5. Thank you.
This is a gift.

Miss Coulter suffers from an affliction I like to call Mariah Carey by Proxy. Celebrities who suffer from this debilitating disease so seldom seek help before some ruthless person takes a photograph of them. Mariah Carey by Proxy afflicts menopausal woman who think they would break the hearts of teenage boys throughout America if they ever showed up in public with a nipple-baring "Love Waits" tube-top. NOTE: Call your doctor if you find yourself wearing clothes that flash undernourished, middle-age legs and surgically-levitated bosoms, particularly when such revealing clothing is not appropriate for the occasion. Side affects may include wearing your hair like a junior high school cheerleader even though you are rapidly approaching 50.

Please join me in prayer for dear, sad Miss Coulter, as plastic surgery and Photoshop do not seem to be sparing this one-note minx from becoming the Baby Jane Hudson of the easy-to-fulminate set.

7. Turn about is fair play.. I say it's time for a book burning.
She wants to play God games with us... let's try that tactic... go to the library... check it out... burn it and offer to pay the fine or replace it with 3 books that actually have facts in them.

That way she isn't making money on the protest and the library gets better material.

8. that would be a waste of a match, and a propaganda victory for right
better to debunk and shame until she fades into obscurity.

11. Maybe, but it would still get more worthy books to the library.
Also, I don't think it would be a shoe in propaganda victory for the right, though I hear what you're saying.

People make a political statement burning books they believe to be obscene. To me it is a well recognized protest that really doesn't hurt anyone. And like Howard Dean's outlandish comments got us DEMs at least token media time, this would get covered. If they thought they could play it to their advantage.

Heck, I'll pay the fine and donate books. They can replace her book when and if they get around to it.

I had a religious fanatic who I thought was a friend "borrow" a book of mine and I never got it back. THey totally convinced him that taking this meditation book away from me was for my spiritual well being. I am a Christian, but I also believe in other complementary forms of spiritual enlightenment. "Living in the Light" to me is more compatible with what Christ taught than bashing gays is.

just my opinion.

17. mandatory fact checking might be better with percent accuracy under
her pic.

She would get 0.01% for spelling her own name correctly.

19. We could always pencil in the inconvienent truths that show her to lying..
Then it's erasable and therefore no permanent damage... although I still don't know if I could do that to a library book. My own have highlights and notes and such if they are repeat reads...but it would be almost harder for me to put even a pencil to a library book than to burn it outright if I were going to give the library replacement cost.

I suppose I could buy post it notes and deposit Coulter Lie Vs Facts on enough pages to make a difference when someone picked it up, but not enough to make any librarian worry about it.

9. Unfortunately, this tactic has been used
on us.

I worked in a library for many years. The wingnuts often check out or steal books and DVDs that they do not like, and fail to return them. Some of them are brazen about it, and refuse to pay for the materials. They do not care if they lose their library privileges. They can always get more reading material at the local wingnut bookstores.

Let her nasty book stay in circulation. Few people will actually check it out. And of those who do, many will fail to finish reading it because it is so boring and badly written.

13. Nah, civilized protest is better for all concerned, but I have to wonder..
"Witches" not really "guilty" of anything except being in a group that knew about herbs that could prevent pregnancy and were often self confident enough to not conform to the rigid norm of the time .... were burned.

Joan of Arc who may have been mentally ill, but actually effected an upsurge of her people on a large scale and ended up burning on the stake was later found out to be a Saint for speaking truth to power.

Maybe burning Mann Coulter would send the wrong message. Put her in a group of people whose contributions to society were worthwhile and whose lives were unfairly cut short.

I mean she already martyr pouts when someone points out the inaccuracies of her rants.. and then goes heavily into screech mode now.

She will either self destruct or face the truth in treatment and make a lot of amends in the not too distant future. If it is the later case, life could get really interesting.. but I'm not holding my breath. I'm thinking she would be in the group going in that think they are Cleopatra... Queens of Denial.

12. Yeah, but this is PURE protest, and people should pay the fine...
AND donate better books, so that it isn't about taking away from the library - only from that particular book.

And to me it is important to take it out of circulation during the initial flush of celebrity. It costs her more to promote it if it flops in the beginning and initial runs dictate whether they do another run.

For whatever reason she is popular and people pay money to have her speak, so some will buy it.

I don't know, maybe you're right. It would require DEMS to rise above and beyond traditional protests of this type and maybe many would not feel like I do about making the library benefit more as a result.

But if ever there was a justification to use one of the right wing tactics on them, this would be a fair choice in my estimation. If done correctly, everyone but Coulter wins.

14. on the other hand, I read somewhere last week that the "book" had been
remaindered before it even hit the shelves.

on the other hand, mis-shelving it could be vastly amusing. find some section of the library that doesn't see a lot of action, and tuck it in there.

I like your idea as well...and it comforts me to know she'll be in paperback soon or not at all due mostly to her own regurgitive personality.

16. ...
No woman in New York wears a little black dress that early in the day unless she is burying someone dead, or looks like someone dead, as she makes a Whore of Babylon predawn retreat from the previous night's licentious debauchery.
