The New York Times is set to report that, "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi established the Web as a powerful tool of the global jihad, mobilizing computer-savvy allies who inspired extremists in Iraq and beyond," RAW STORY has learned.
The Times describes Zarqawi and his aides as being the first terrorists to make full use of the new technology over the last two years for propaganda, recruiting, and instruction. Their websites were effectively able to take the place of now-destroyed al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan.
In recent months, the group's video clips have been posted on multiple servers and even include a cell phone version. Videos too graphic to have ever appeared on mainstream news media have been disseminated in this manner. One expert on terrorism calls Zarqawi "the Alexander Graham Bell of terrorist propaganda" and says that, "It's a new day for these groups because of him."
Zarqawi's speeches would translated into multiple languages and posted by his fans within hours of their release. Now those followers are posting electronic eulogies, praising his martyrdom, and vowing to continue his fight.
