GOP Retains Dirty Duke's Seat: A Lesson Learned for Democrats? (109 comments )
........

Democrat Francine Busby actually did fairly well, losing to Republican Brian Bilbray by only 5 percent in a district where Republicans hold a 14 point edge in registration.

But, in the end, the problem for Busby wasn't the money -- it was the message.

.........

Busby, 55, a Cardiff school board member, made the Cunningham conviction for bribery and an alleged "culture of corruption" under President Bush and Republicans a centerpiece of her campaign. It is a theme that national Democrats hope to use in November.

"A theme that national Democrats hope to use in November?" Only if they want the same results. It looks like I'm gonna have to keep saying this again and again: "It's the national security, stupid!" Yes, Democrats should point out the GOP's "culture of corruption" -- but Iraq and how it has made America less safe needs to be the "centerpiece" of the 2006 campaign. Busby didn't do it and lost.

Will national Democrats learn the lesson of California's 50th?

1. National Security combined with illegal immigration.
Busby lost because of her stance on illegal immigration. The repukes are using it to their advantage and the Democratic party is letting them. There is a reason that Lou Dobbs ratings are so high.

First off the Crazy King George is FOR AMNESTY. He may call it something else but that is what he is offering to illegals and the Democratic party has aligned themselves with that idiot. Most everyone hates bush*. You can't win an election by aligning your party with that idiot or the idiot's political platform. Notice that Bilbray did not run as a pro-bush* candidate. Yet somehow the Democratic candidate came off looking more pro-bush* than the repuke who ran.

There are millions of people who align themselves with the Democratic party who would vote for a repuke because he says he is willing to make an effort of stopping illegal immigration, even though the repuke's idiot leaders is saying something else. These repukes are saying they will attempt to control illegal immigration. You have the repukes voting for him, half the progressives and most of the undecided because he is willing to make an effort at controlling the borders. The Democratic party is shooting themselves in the foot by promoting illegal immigration and supporting the King George political platform.
