If you were among the many wondering why President Bush spent much of his week advocating a constitutional change to define marriage as between one man and one woman, look at Southern California's U.S. House District 50.
Even with a solid Republican majority, this district was no guaranteed GOP win. Brian Bilbray narrowly defeated Democrat Francine Busby for the right to serve the final seven months of corrupt Republican Randy "Duke" Cunningham's term.
The Busby-Bilbray showdown is just a taste of what the GOP faces in November's congressional midterm election.
In that light, it's no surprise that Republicans wanted some midterm love, and what better way to find it than an obvious sop to the base on a tried-and-true wedge issue?
