My Unwitting Role in the Rove 'Scoop'

By Joe Lauria
Sunday, June 18, 2006; B02

The May 13 story on the Web site Truthout.org was explosive: Presidential adviser Karl Rove had been indicted by Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald in connection with his role in leaking CIA officer Valerie Plame's name to the media, it blared. The report set off hysteria on the Internet, and the mainstream media scrambled to nail it down. Only . . . it wasn't true.

As we learned last week, Rove isn't being indicted, and the supposed Truthout scoop by reporter Jason Leopold was wildly off the mark. It was but the latest installment in the tale of a troubled young reporter with a history of drug addiction whose aggressive disregard for the rules ended up embroiling me in a bizarre escapade -- and raised serious questions about journalistic ethics.

In his nine-year reporting career, Leopold has managed, despite his drug abuse and a run-in with the law, to work with such big-time news organizations as the Los Angeles Times, Dow Jones Newswire and Salon. He broke some bona fide stories on the Enron scandal and the CIA leak investigation. But in every job, something always went wrong, and he got the sack. Finally, he landed at Truthout, a left-leaning Web site.

I met Leopold once, three days before his Rove story ran, to discuss his recently published memoir, "News Junkie." It seems to be an honest record of neglect and abuse by his parents, felony conviction, cocaine addiction -- and deception in the practice of journalism.

2. Oh whatever.
WaPo is not the enemy. Leopold is. ALL evidence points to the guy being a fraud, and yet alarming number of DUers stands behind his bullshit. Hell of a "faith based initiative," the support this fucking embarrasment's getting...

WaPo merely reported it. thanks for the sense of priorities...
We should all forget about BFEE and torch Leopold's house.

10. Nice straw-man.
I blame Leopold for what he did. I blame the Bush administration for what they did and continue to do. Just because there's a greater evil in the world doesn't make what Leopold did not disgusting. By your logic Gitmo must be OK because the Nazi death camps were worse?

14. Hardly.
I'm down on Leopold because there's overwhelming evidence that he's full of utter shit - that evidence being, primarily, that Karl Rove, contrary to Leopold's published assertion, was not indicted. Gannon would attack him irrespective of evidence because he's a partisan hack. If you want to call me a Freeper, just come out and say it, but all the false binaries and straw men you can puke up won't stop your blind faith in a demonstrable liar from being pathetic.

9. BushCheneyRove are the Enemy
It's looking more and more like Leopold was right: There was an indictment, but Gonzales quashed it and shut Fitzgerald down.

11. I'll be glad to eat a huge crow pie if that's true.
Nothing short of a Bush/Cheney impeachment would make me more satisfied than a Karl Rove frogmarch. But before I go fetch a fork and tuck in to that crow, I'd like to see the credible evidence. If Leopold or TruthOut has that evidence, they oughtn't be withholding it.

12. Sadly, Gonzales Shutting Fitz Down Means No More Investigations. At All.
All they have to do is steal enough elections to keep control of Congress,
and Rove is taking care of that.

3. Please
The Washington Post is going down like a $10.00 whore for Rove.

I still think something happened and the A.G. quashed it.
That funny little sealed v sealed document on the day that Rove was
supposed to be indicted on Fitz's web site gives me reason to think
that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark."

Rove said that Wilson's wife was fair game.

I guess treason isn't treason anymore.

4. Shades of "Favorite Son" author Roving too (Hatfield?)
Edited on Sun Jun-18-06 07:24 PM by robbedvoter
Any time anyone is going to bash someone in order to convince me that Rove has been 'cleared" of something - I am going to wear my "vice-versa" hearing aid.
Hmmm...let's see...Truth out or Wa Po? Which one has the better track record?:dilemma:
Let's see..Rove's indictment - 10 days in September....
Rove's Indictment - dems taking money from Abramoff....
Sorry, but if it's in the WaPo, it's trash to me.

If Leopold stole Lauria's identity , phone number and job description, he is done as far as I am concerned.
