We Won't Get Fooled Again

By Timothy V. Gatto

I've been reading the different articles headlining OpEdNews.com and I read articles by people that believe that we have won a victory over the right. We have, but not a victory that's final, or even in place yet. If you are only saying that the Right Wing Conservatives are not in the majority, then yes, we have won. If you are saying we now have a Congress that can lead this country back to what it was twelve years ago, you are going to be very disappointed.

Of the Democrats that have stayed in Congress and haven't lost their seats, there aren't many there that are worth their salt. Most voted to fund this brainless idiots war, and not one of them have raised the point that campaign financing is being done almost entirely by corporate and special interest groups which is the prime reason that our elected officials don't have to count on the people to bankroll their political campaigns. They have a huge war chest that is given to them by people that never want campaign finance reform to come to pass.

Just to point out again how much it cost's to run a political party, the Unions gave the DNC 70 million dollars just to get out the vote. Think about that for a minute. 70 million dollars in contributions just to get out the vote! That was just money that only matched what the Republicans had. The Democrats had to promise the Unions that they would fight for unions that used to make up 33% of the American Workforce and now, because of the years the right wing conservatives have had Washington, only make up 8% of the workforce. The Democrats and the Unions haven't worked like this for years, but their common disgust with the Bush administration and its rubber-stamping Congress made them get together. That's the way that it always should have been. The Unions should be siding with the Democrats and the rich with the Republicans. Nowadays, you can't tell a Republican from a Democrat, you don't need too.

At least they don't need you too. Only on Election Day do they need you to distinguish between the two parties. The rest of the time they are counting on their "Corporate Partners" and not the Unions who have diminished in strength in the last 12 years. We need to make sure that the Democrats continue to support the Unions so that they don't have to cater to the corporate money handlers. This hurts the left more than you know. We won't see any major changes until we get the big polluting, outsourcing, benefit cutting, corporations out of the halls of Congress. The Democrats are NOT your friends. They basically are all cut from the same cloth as Joe Lieberman. Especially Hillary Clinton, and Obama and everyone considering a run for the White House in 2008. THAT COSTS BILLIONS! Where do you believe that money will come from? The young Democrats? Please.

Don't go celebrating just yet. We need to keep the heat on these Democrats. They have to make good on their promises to the Unions. They have to address Campaign Reform. I for one am sick and tired of big money running our government. They don't do a goddamned thing for the middle class. That's who I am, and that's what I'll probably be when I die. To praise the big money grabbers doesn't do me any good. Remember that song, "Meet the new Boss, same as the old Boss"*. So don't let yourself be fooled again. Tell them you know where they are coming from and tell them to stop the intrusion of Big Oil, and the lawyers , and the AMA, and all of the countless donors that make up the Pac's and special interest groups.....

1. It is very easy to become active in the Democratic Party in
California. You find a local Democratic Club, join, attend meetings, volunteer for candidates you like whether they win or lose, and before you know it you are a delegate to the State Convention, and you can vote and participate at many decision-making levels. I don't know how the Democratic Party is organized in other states, but there is no excuse for just complaining in California. That's why we have Barbara Boxer in the Senate and Antonio Villaraigosa as mayor of L.A. and Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco, etc. That's why we defeated the abortion propositions. That's why even Schwarzenegger has to at least cooperate with our Democratic state legislature. Sure, we still have Diane Feinstein, but we are way ahead of other states. You just have to get active in the party. Either you or your friends need to run for office, win or lose.

2. Bingo !
Now, I'm heading down to Anahiem for the E-Board meetings this weekend, where e-voting is likely to get lots of discussion...especially since we were able to elect a progressive SOS, Debra Bowen !

Cheers !
