Ignatieff named deputy Liberal leader
Dion says appointment creates a `dream team to put in front of Canadians' for upcoming election

OTTAWA–The final ballot rivals for the top Liberal job are now partners, with Michael Ignatieff officially named as deputy to new Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion.

"It solders us at the hip. It creates an institutional bond," Ignatieff, the Harvard professor-turned MP, said in an interview yesterday.

"We will have a dream team to put in front of Canadians, and it's my dream to have Michael Ignatieff as close as possible to me," Dion said as he made the announcement in Quebec City.

It's unusual in past Canadian political history for second-place finishers to end up as deputy leaders. Former prime ministers Brian Mulroney, Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin passed aside their closest rivals when they named deputies on assuming office.

3. Thats because he was for the war. Then said if he had the intel the
PM Chretien had..he would have been against it. He was only an intellectual at the time. Didn't have access to the same intelligence Chretien had..where Chretien did a thumbs down on the war in Iraq because the intel from the USA didn't make any sense.

4. I personally think he's all sizzle and no steak
I am amazed at how naive he is in spite of all his PhDs. I couldn't believe the article he wrote about what a lovely thing it was that America is an Empire (New York Review of Books or New York Times) and what good things this Empire will do in the world. He must be the only historian and political scientist alive who has never read PROGRAMME FOR A NEW AMERICAN CENTURY and the only Canadian on the left who thinks the Neocons are nice boys. Lewis Lapham thinks he's an idiot and I must say I wonder how a person with that much education can be so innocent. I was terrified he would win the Liberal Leadership. Now I think he's neutered and harmless and may even be an asset to the party. I am sure he regrets his past position and he must see it's political suicide to side with any of George W. Bush's positions. Stephen Harper --- the poor fool doesn't realize it yet.
