What, More Karl?

When you want to drain the swamp, you've got to pry Karl Rove out of the drain.

By James Heflin If water always seeks the lowest point, is Karl Rove one hundred percent water? Nearly every time a new Bush scandal hits the radar, the same guy gets implicated but not fingered, and the same patterns emerge. The first round of denials usually hits that pitch-perfect attempt at denying while not really denying. You know, “Mistakes were made.” By whom is anybody’s guess. Or something along the lines of, “We have no knowledge that had any involvement in the planning of the idea of what some bitter partisans allege to have happened.”

Round two of denials usually follows evidence that whoever wasn’t involved in what didn’t happen actually did do what did happen. Then, it turns out,the wrong-doer was acting as a maverick, and nobody else knew about his actions.

When Rovian misdeeds have been revealed, the tendency is clear: whatever candidate Rove was working for was deliberately left out of the loop. Thus when, as happened in Alabama in Rove’s earlier days as a political strategist, false rumors surface that a child advocate judge is in fact a pedophile, no one knows anything, least of all the candidate who benefits.

~snip~

Karl Rove is no mystery, and no genius—just an opportunistic operative who doesn’t concern himself with ethics. He is rather a mold, destroying things only when safely shielded from the light. His eternal success as a strategist of amoral wile can be chalked up to a combination of luck, public apathy and ignorance, and operating behind the public façade of the Republican Party. Since 2000 and the ascendance of Rove’s brand of politics and his hand-picked candidate, the ugly truths of how things work in the West Wing have been kept mostly under wraps, thanks to a Republican congress that was perfectly happy to also play a know-nothing role.
