The D. C. Madam’s Public Service
by Allan J. Lichtman

In 2004, Vitter won election as the first Republican Senator from Louisiana in 120 years. He featured pro-family ads with his wife and children, called upon voters to stand up for “Louisiana values, not Massachusetts’s values,” and secured 76 percent of voters who cared most about moral issues. “We met Vitter, the dad who knows that it’s family that really matters, not whether we are Republicans or Democrats,” wrote Times-Picayune columnist James Gill.

Vitter’s exposure comes hard on the heels of a recent scandal engulfing Rev. Ted Haggard, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, one of America’s oldest and most respected Christian Right groups. Haggard, also an outspoken opponent of abortion and gay marriage, resigned his presidency and ministry and entered long-term rehabilitation amid allegations that he had purchased drugs and the services of a male prostitute.

Vitter-style hypocrisy, however, extends deeply into the history of America’s modern Right. Charles Lindbergh, the spokesman for America First in the 1940s secretly fathered a second family in Germany, unknown to his American wife and six children. Strom Thurmond, who campaigned for president in 1948 to preserve “the racial integrity and purity of the White race,” concealed a mixed-race daughter for 75 years. Oil magnate H. L. Hunt, who spent millions to propagate Christian conservatism in the 1950s, was a gambler and multiple bigamist.

Terry Dolan, founder in the 1970s of the National Conservative Political Action Committee, which joined the anti-gay fund-raising frenzy with a letter warning “our nation’s moral fiber is being weakened by the growing homosexual movement,” was a closeted homosexual. Here in Maryland, conservative Representative Robert Bauman was arrested in 1980 for soliciting sex from a 16 year-old boy.

Vitter did not deny that he indulged in the D. C. Madam’s juicy services. Rather, as shown above, he apologized and reported forgiveness from God and his family. He said that he will respect his family and keep the matter private. Fair enough, although you’ve got to wonder about a guy with the hubris to say he not only asked God for forgiveness but actually received forgiveness.

The bigger question is whether he is now willing to say that our choice of marriage partners or our reproductive decisions should be private matters between us, our family, and our God? Will he now propose that we now teach our children, not just abstinence, but safe sexual practice? It’s time for politicians to extend to others the tolerance and privacy they reserve for themselves.

2. Vitter-style hypocrisy: Actually it should be Swaggart-style hypocrisy.
In 1986, Swaggart exposed fellow Assemblies of God minister Marvin Gorman, who was having an affair with one of his parishoners. The following year, Swaggart then exposed Jim Bakker's sexual indiscretions and soon after appeared on the Larry King Show stating that Bakker was a "cancer in the body of Christ." As a retaliatory move, Marvin Gorman hired a private-detective to follow Swaggart. During his investigation, the detective found Swaggart in a Lake Charles, Louisiana motel with prostitute Debra Murphree and took pictures as proof of the tryst. Gorman presented Swaggart with the photos in a blackmail attempt, but Swaggart refused to pay. Gorman then presented the pictures to the presbytery leadership of the Assemblies of God, who decided that Swaggart should be suspended from broadcasting his television program for three months.

On February 21, 1988, without giving the details of his transgressions, Swaggart tearfully spoke to his family, congregation, and audience, saying, "I have sinned against You, my Lord, and I would ask that Your precious blood would wash and cleanse every stain until it is in the seas of God's forgiveness." Four days later on a New Orleans morning news show, Murprhee stated that while Swaggart was a regular customer, they had never engaged in intercourse.

Against the ruling of the governing body of the Assemblies of God, Swaggart returned to his television pulpit long before his three-month suspension expired. He stated, "If I do not return to the pulpit this weekend, millions of people will go to hell." Believing that Swaggart was not genuinely repentant in not submitting to their authority, the Assemblies of God immediately defrocked Swaggart, removing his credentials and ministerial license.

On October 11, 1991, he was found in the company of another prostitute, Rosemary Garcia. The pair was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol in Indio, California, for driving down the wrong side of the street. According to Garcia, Swaggart stopped to proposition her on the side of the road. When Garcia was asked by the patrolman why she was with Swaggart, she replied, "He asked me for sex. I mean, that's why he stopped me. That's what I do. I'm a prostitute." This time, rather than tearfully confessing to his congregation, Swaggart told his flock that "The Lord told me it's flat none of your business." His son Donnie then announced to the stunned audience that his father would be temporarily stepping down as head of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries for "a time of healing and counseling."

Must be something in that Louisiana water. Swaggart's whoring went much deeper than what was made public (surprised?). A friend of mine flew Swaggart's GulfStream-II jet and has many, many Hooker & Likker stories on the Right Reverend Mr. Swaggart. My friend, a born-again Christian, finally quit Swaggart Ministries over Jimmy's immoral behavior.
