EXCERPT from Naomi Klein's new book: The Shock Doctrine: Plunder & Disaster, Bush & Pinochet
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 01:13 PM by yurbud
Naomi Klein has done ground-breaking reporting on the Bushies planned to privatize and plunder Iraq, and the quieter but equally lethal plunder by neoliberalism in other countries. Her explosive new book exposes the lie that free markets thrive on freedom. In our first exclusive extract, the No Logo author reveals the business of exploiting disaster at the expense of the disaster victims. This is a snapshot of the economic policy that forms the spine of what Bush is doing to Iraq and America.

Not incidentally, this has been tried before. The guru of laissez-fair capitalism, Milton Friedman, advised dictator Augusto Pinochet how to privatize and deregulate everything to maximize profits even as Pinochet was rounding up tens of thousands to disappear, torture, and execute.

EXCERPTS

The news racing around the shelter that day was that the Republican Congressman Richard Baker had told a group of lobbyists, "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did." Joseph Canizaro, one of New Orleans' wealthiest developers, had just expressed a similar sentiment: "I think we have a clean sheet to start again. And with that clean sheet we have some very big opportunities." All that week Baton Rouge had been crawling with corporate lobbyists helping to lock in those big opportunities: lower taxes, fewer regulations, cheaper workers and a "smaller, safer city" - which in practice meant plans to level the public housing projects. Hearing all the talk of "fresh starts" and "clean sheets", you could almost forget the toxic stew of rubble, chemical outflows and human remains just a few miles down the highway.

One of those who saw opportunity in the floodwaters of New Orleans was the late Milton Friedman, grand guru of unfettered capitalism and credited with writing the rulebook for the contemporary, hyper-mobile global economy. Ninety-three years old and in failing health, "Uncle Miltie", as he was known to his followers, found the strength to write an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal three months after the levees broke. "Most New Orleans schools are in ruins," Friedman observed, "as are the homes of the children who have attended them. The children are now scattered all over the country. This is a tragedy. It is also an opportunity."

Friedman's radical idea was that instead of spending a portion of the billions of dollars in reconstruction money on rebuilding and improving New Orleans' existing public school system, the government should provide families with vouchers, which they could spend at private institutions.

In sharp contrast to the glacial pace with which the levees were repaired and the electricity grid brought back online, the auctioning-off of New Orleans' school system took place with military speed and precision. Within 19 months, with most of the city's poor residents still in exile, New Orleans' public school system had been almost completely replaced by privately run charter schools.

***

Friedman first learned how to exploit a shock or crisis in the mid-70s, when he advised the dictator General Augusto Pinochet. Not only were Chileans in a state of shock after Pinochet's violent coup, but the country was also traumatised by hyperinflation. Friedman advised Pinochet to impose a rapid-fire transformation of the economy - tax cuts, free trade, privatised services, cuts to social spending and deregulation.

6. Here's an MP3 link to an interview Klein did on CBC
I heard it last week, VERY interesting.

And it also features GREG PALAST. Oh, and some RW hack who tried to dismiss what Palast had to say as a "consipracy theory". Palast got steamed at that remark.

has always been the tactic of authoritarian narcissistic evil heated over ambitious tyrants. Abuse of of vulnerability is the only way a tyrant can get away with his sick selfish will being imposed.

I wish that all the fucking free market fundamentalist evil hearted, greed mongering ,abusive shit heads, who think a disaster is an opportunity to exploit people's misfortunes for profits finds their own lives in ruins. May the people exploited destroy the opportunistic thugs in suits, and shut down all piggy ambitions, May the ambitions of evil men be always crushed to dust and blown away by the winds these pigs once cheered as they destroyed people.Stop the market machine the cancer, crush it down.. I curse them all.I hate them. I spit on them I want them all cursed, crushed, humiliated and hated, exposed and destroyed.I want them to be dragged down and crushed by those hurt by their evil ambitions. FUCK THE EVIL FREE MARKET and fuck their shock SCAMS imposed on suffering people!!I HATE all greedy over ambitious psychopathic rich people and their goddamn paper lie corporations and their selfish ambitions and"economic dreams". Fuck them all.Forever. This opportunistic thievery of the public trust must be forced to an END.These pigs have NO RIGHT to exploit disasters and sweep people's lives away for their infernal ambitions and profit.Ruin to disaster profiteers!

As I write this it has begun to thunder outside.

May lightning strike the wealthy over ambitious privatizing fundamentalist pirate pigs and may personal disaster cut them off from their sick "economic dreams" forever. May the greedy and ambitious thugs be silent made poor and subjected and may their ideologies be seen as evil itself, for that is what they do.

Sekhmet the disaster profiteers need to suffer for their ambitious games that harm people who are vulnerable and traumatized.Burn the greedy ones for taking advantage in such an evil scam. I invoke Sekhmet and her Heka, for justice to be forced upon them May it be like a rain of lightning, misfortune, pain and ruin...Make them unable to steal.

I am so pissed and disgusted.Capitalism is just putrid.
Free market fundies are psychopaths evil hearted greedy pigs.
