Living in the Land of Nod

Living in the Land of Nod
By David Glenn Cox

Nod is a proud man, proud of his country and proud of himself. His leader tells him his country is the greatest in the world and because he follows the leader he also among the greatest in the world. He always waves his flag and listens closely when the leader speaks. People are dangerous and they want to hurt us; they have dangerous ideas and they worship differently. Nod had never thought about dangerous ideas before after all why should he?

The leader had never told him to before, but if the leader said it’s so then it must be so, as the leader is never wrong. Nod had been raised never to question the leader; to Nod it would be unpatriotic to question the leader. When the leader points and says they are our enemies and want to hurt us Nod gets his gun and salutes. When the leader says they are criminals and terrorists and we must lock them away in camps. Nod says they are criminals and terrorists and we must lock them away in camps.

When people are hungry or cold the leader says it is their own fault they are hungry and cold and Nod says, it is their own fault that they are hungry and cold. When people ask for a change in the government the leader says they are not loyal and are enemies of the state and Nod says they are not loyal and enemies of the state.

Then one day the land of Nod was bombed and the leader said, see I’m right! And Nod said, see the leader’s right. The leader said, we must fight first in this country then we must fight this one and then in another one until all our enemies are defeated. So that our enemies will see our power and because our enemies want to take over the whole world. And by now you have probably guessed what Nod said.

Nod saluted and wept for the war dead and he always he kept his flag at the ready and thanked God that they had such a great leader to protect them. For the leader had vowed no matter how many countries they must invade they would be protected for it was God’s will and God had chosen him to lead the land of Nod. This was a titanic struggle; their enemies wanted to take over the whole world.

The land of Nod was the greatest land in all the world and the leader insisted they were the greatest people in the whole world. It made Nod feel all warm inside to feel so important and it made him dedicate himself to the fight. For the leader said our enemies couldn’t be trusted with signatures on paper is was to show weakness to make peace. We must fight wars and bomb and kill kill, kill so Nod said, we must, the leader said we must, so we must.

But the wars went badly and some people began to question the leader. Nod became angry, not because the war was going badly but because some were questioning the leader. After all if the leader was wrong maybe the land of Nod wasn’t the greatest country in all the world and that would mean that Nod wasn’t among the greatest in the world but just a faceless number among the billions of faceless numbers.

But Nod could see what was going on, the enemies had infiltrated the government.
They were criminals as well and should be put in the camps with the terrorists. Their subversive ideas and questioning the leader were disrespectful if not down right dangerous. Imagine, lowly citizens questioning the leader and playing right into the hands of our enemies, enemies that wanted to take over the whole world.

Then one day Nod heard on his radio that the leader had died in his bunker in Berlin. Nod was shocked but was heartened to hear that the leader died fighting the Jews and Bolsheviks. But Nod began to cry because he didn’t know what to think, now that the leader was gone! Nod thought, what would happen to us now? What will we do now that our leader is gone?

How can I live in a world with out the leader to lead us? A world run by our enemies who are trying to take over the whole world. How could God allow this to happen to them? Nod was a good and patriotic and was just doing his job, he always made sure to fulfill his quota of Zyclon B because the leader had said they needed it and it would have been wrong to ask why. Nod never hesitated or tarried and despite his faithful service he would be forced to live in a world where his leader was reviled and his enemies ruled.

A world to his mind where evil reigned and was trying to take over the whole world.

1. In all honesty,
Nod would have lasted longer if he had nuclear weapons, Reapers, B-1s, V-22s and an all volunteer army. Just saying.
