HILLARY CLINTON TO CAMPBELL BROWN--WHICH PLANET ARE YOU ON?..by Katrina vanden Heuvel .
i hated to see a women-"journalist" ask this stupid question!!

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters?bid=45&pid=252210

HILLARY CLINTON TO CAMPBELL BROWN--WHICH PLANET ARE YOU ON?...There were many moments of substance in Thursday's wideranging debate. Joe Biden stating forcefully that if President Bush takes the country to war with Iran without congressional authorization he should be impeached.Bill Richardson explaining why, as Governor of New Mexico, he gave driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants as "a matter of public safety."

.............

Then there was Hillary Clinton's effective, savvy and generational wielding of the gender card. About halfway through the evening, Campbell Brown, the perky 30-something CNN anchor, asked Clinton about something she'd said on a recent visit to her alma mater Wellesley College, " In so many ways," Clinton told an enthusiastic group of students, "this all-woman college prepared me to compete in the all-boys club of presidential politics." What did you mean, Brown asked, by the "all -boys club?"

Clinton sighed, smiled, and with a tone of almost-maternal exasperation that any intelligent, sentient woman in 2007 could ask such a question, replied that it was pretty clear to many women in America that impediments exist when dealing with "the boys" who overpopulate our media and political worlds. Her campaign, she explained to Brown, is about making history by breaking the "highest and hardest glass ceiling."

.............

I was reminded tonight of the Hillary Clinton who, on one of her first trips to Iowa in January, told members of the state central committee, "When you're attacked, you have to deck your opponent."

2. I haven't seen her whine.
I've only seen her detractors do so.

Her campaign admitted they would use the complaint about "poling on".That is whining.

4. Stating a fact
Isn't whining.

They were piling on her.

But hey --if you get all your info from cartoons --then I guess we see your level of thought.

7. It's not 'piling on'.
It's CAMPAIGNING.

And she and Bill damn well know it.

They deliberatly pulled that to encourage her rivals to mute their criticisms - meanwhile, she can say any damn thing she wants about them mudslingling or using republican tactics.

It's all very rovian.

9. No.
What IS Rovian is to use words like "whining" to describe Clinton.

Nice try. You might wish to look in a mirror.

10. Now THAT is rovian.
I have never said she is whining. Taking talking point from other people and applying them as generalities to disparage those who you cannot answer directly,

that is rovian.

13. That's not a whine, it's a statement of fact. Led by the Russert, they
were piline on. And she stood up to the attacks, which was Bill's points.

As someone wrote in Salon, it was classic comedic timing.

And in that pregnant pause that followed, every woman in America who has ever "from time to time" suffered "impediments" in her own work life, had a moment to identify with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

IMHO, it was the highlight of the evening.

and I find some of the "alleged frontrunners " tactics and personnel offensive.

22. What tactics? Is pointing out that gender discrimination exists, a tactic?
She was asked a couple questions, and she answered them.

What should she have done? Refused to answer them on the grounds that to answer may be a tactic?

24. Maybe your key to success is being
"gender undeclared." :) Why would you use that in your profile?

Saracat, I disagree with you about Clinton's use of "tactics" in answering that loaded question from CB, but I respect your opinion- assuming you are indeed a female with bumps on your head like me!

21. Some of us are perhaps too inexperienced to understand
what HRC is talking about.

But there are millions and millions of women all over the country who, because of their gender, have "from time to time" suffered "impediments" in their work life. And they know all too well that the "boys club" in politics -- as in many other fields -- is quite real.

And millions of us, whether we saw the whole debate or just watched parts on youtube, were cheering that line.

27. Would you have preferred that Clinton ask Brown if she could count?
as in:

Count the number of prior female US Presidents?
Count the number of other female candidates on the stage at the present debate?
Count the number of female Republican Pres. candidates?
etc.

When there are 100% men except you, I think that is about the most basic and indisputable definition of an all-boys club as you can get. Brown's q., which was a follow up after Clinton had already addressed her views on the issue, deserved ridicule.

And you had better believe Brown knew how ridiculous she was being, if you watched her reaction to Clinton's much more subtle reply.

26. Mediawhores aside, that was a sham of a "debate"
And CNN and the DNC or whomever else authorized this, did a real disservice to everyone. This was all a set up. Biased audience, Kucinich getting the least amount of time, failure to ask Hillary the "planted questioneer at one of her rallies about Global Warming." And then the cutesy last question about diamonds and pearls, and CNN FORCED the young lady to ask THAT QUESTION and not the one the young lady WANTED TO ASK, which was about Yucca nuke burial issues.

This whole thing is a set up. What I can't understand is why Clinton supporters WANT TO LOSE A YEAR FROM NOW?!

The repubthugs will tear Hillary apart if she's the nominee, I predict.

We gotta go with Edwards and/or Obama. I think they need to run as a ticket. Hopefully before Iowa and NH.

31. Zidzi
Zidzi,

I apologize if you got the impression I was labeling you as a
Hillary supporter. I completely agree with you about the
mediawhores. But I would place them ALL (including Keith
Olbermann, et al) at the bottom of my list of admirable
"professionals." My point was that singling out the
lady CNN reporter who asked the meaningless question, was just
a microcosm of the whole staged mediawhore pushing and bowing
to the Clinton machine. Wolf Blitzer was a clown. To have
Lou Dobbs anchor a pre-debate "show" was absolutely
ridiculous. And to have an after-debate "show" with
James Carville (sp?) was beyond madness.

It's obvious to me the PTB behind all the front stage
mediawhores are really PUSHING for a Hillary win. What do you
all know that we don't?

It's that they, these corporate media whores, know, just as so
many Republicans have said, that they are DROOLING to run
against her. Just look behind that curtain. The mainstream
corporate media as well as the Republicans WANT HILLARY AS
THEIR DEM CANDIDATE!

Y'all just stop and think for a moment about that.

So, Zidzi, thanks for the welcome, and BTW, who do you
support?

My first choice was/is Mike Gravel, but he's been eliminated
by the Dem party machine and the media from even SPEAKING. My
second choice is Dennis Kucinich, but in the penultimate MSNBC
"debate," Kucinich was reduced to laughing stock
with a UFO question. And he has NO chance anyway. Therefore,
my first choice is John Edwards. He's just progressive enough
for me, though I disagree strongly with some of his positions.
And he has the best chance to win.

Keep the eye on the prize. Electability is key here.

After Edwards, I'd say Obama, Richardson, Dodd, Biden, but
truthfully, Hillary Clinton is LAST on my list. I pray she is
not the Dem nominee.

28. So if women candidates respond to stupid and disingenuous questions
with an assertive put-down, this constitutes "whining and threatening"?

If Obama had to confront the same type of racism, I would expect him to be absolutely as withering as Clinton was. Leadership means not tolerating this bullshit. Campbell Brown knew good and well what she was trying to do and when caught, had to try to weasel out of the question.

And I say this as a supporter of a candidate who has been advantaged by his race and gender (Edwards).
