Bush's frayed legacy now hit by economic woes
Bush's frayed legacy now hit by economic woes
By Matt Spetalnick

WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Even when faced with his lowest approval ratings over the Iraq war, U.S. President George W. Bush had always pointed proudly to what he considered his crowning achievement -- his stewardship of the economy.

But now, with oil prices near record highs, the mortgage market on the verge of meltdown and the specter of recession looming, Bush is seeing even that seemingly safe part of his frayed presidential legacy slipping away.

Bush is scrambling to halt the economic slide and calm roiled world financial markets with an economic stimulus package of up to $150 billion.

But even if that does the job, Bush will have a hard time salvaging his place in history.

With one year left in office, he is bogged down in an unpopular foreign war, his domestic agenda is stalled by an opposition-led Congress and he is struggling for relevance as attention turns to the battle to choose his successor.

"The way things are now, his legacy looks very grim," said Terry Madonna, a political scientist at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, who predicts Bush will ultimately rank in the bottom 25 percent of American presidents. "It's hard to imagine him making a significant comeback."

1. Worst President Ever
is just not satisfying enough. After all, you're looking back. How about "Worst President Forever"? Now there's something you can sink your teeth into.

2. I used to take delight when chimps errors were proven.
But, his crimes, greed and entire presidency has inflicted serious damage on the country. It will take a generational sacrifices to fix the problems that will be inherited.

His failures now just bring sadness, remorse and anger. I don't know what will be left of America in one more year.

3. George W. Bush: Worst. President. Ever.
Bar none!

The worst of the entire bunch!!

Bottom 25% is just a nice way to say: dead last, George. And you deserve it.

17. How much further upward can bush fail?
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 07:38 AM by mwb970
There's not much room for more failure. He's already the most powerful man in the world, and has been a huge failure in every aspect of everything he has ever done. (Talk about King Midas in reverse!)

Where does he go from here? Emperor? Supreme Ruler of the Universe? Does he now become God?

A final thought. Try to imagine a president who is right as often as bush is wrong. A president who does good things as often as bush does bad, anti-American things. A president who tells the truth as often as bush lies. Such a person would be wonderful but it's hard to imagine anyone being that good. I guess it's just plain easier to be an evil, incompetent traitor than otherwise.

11. Bottom 25% of US Presidents is being very generous
More like bottom 25% of all world leaders in recorded history, which easily makes him worst US President ever.

13. 1/43 = 0.0232; therefore * = bottom 2.32%
although, to be fair, there is the double Grover Cleveland effect, which would instead make * the bottom 2.38%! (1/42)

16. Bottom 25%? More like bottom 5%!
I don't see how any other president would have had enough power to do the damage to America and the world that bush has brought about. He will be hated forever.
