When I received my commission....
...lo those many years ago, there was no chest bump, no mugging for the camera, no cell phone calls, there was only a steely eyed gaze from a four-star General, a firm handshake and a "Congratulations, lieutenant." This non-pilot posing as the CINC reminds me of every clown who didn't make it through West Point, ROTC or OCS and those newly minted officers have no clue what they are about to face when they meet their first CMsgt.

1. You didn't have a President with the mentality of a college freshman during Rush Week.

2. When I was going through my schools in the Navy, we had a female Lt. jg as
an instructor. She told us the story of being at the recruiter's office and filling out paperwork when a Master Chief Petty Officer walked by. The Master Chief had 7 gold hash marks on his uniform and our instructor said, "Wow -- what rank is he?" The guy helping her said, "He's a Master Chief...and in 90 days you are going to out rank him."

Those of us who have served know who really runs things...

4. My father was a retired Chief, also.
He told me that he was offered Warrant Officer and LDO programs, but he loved being a Chief.

He always said, "It took me years to make Chief -- why would I want to start at the bottom, again?"
