For US hawks, Madrid 2004 = Munich 1938 - Great Read
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 09:06 PM by Teddy_Salad
The decision of the Spanish electorate to oust its pro-George Bush conservative government has resulted in the shrill cry of "appeasement" in the US media. But in their eagerness to compare Spain's Socialists to British premier Neville Chamberlain, the neo-cons are, as usual, ignoring important facts - and exposing their distrust of democracy.

2. Excellent! Excellent!
Who is Jim Lobe. Out of Asia, we read something rational. Fresh air. You won't hear this on the cable shows.

4. Jim Lobe is...
"Jim Lobe, who has worked as IPS' (Inter Press Service) correspondent in the Washington, D.C., bureau for most of the last 23 years, has followed the ups and downs of neo-conservatives since the well before their rise in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda attacks on New York and the Pentagon, and his expertise has been recognized by major international media...

IPS has compiled all of Jim's stories on the neo-conservative ascendancy that he has written for IPS over the last several years on this website for those interested in learning more about the neo-conservatives, their networks and remarkable success in gaining influence over Bush's foreign policy."

3. Brilliant analysis
Don't confuse American pundits and propagandists with facts, they have no use for them. Totalitarians rarely do.

5. What will appease the US
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 11:08 AM by donhakman
When Spain says it will opt out on the war in Iraq - The US says Spain is chickening out on the war on terrorism.
In unison the Bush Cabal scream "appeasment!".
Although to a reasonable person they are clearly two different things (Iraq and Al Quada). The US is saying once again "You are with us or against us". But Spain is not with the terrorists and in fact are against them.

IRAQ AND AL QUADA MERGE?

Yes Al Quada is now streaming into Iraq from Syria along with powerful explosives.
Remember 3 weeks ago a train in Syria near the Iraq border carrying "fertilizer"? It exploded destroying 3 villages and homes as far as 5 miles away.
When you think the Bush war can't get worse they fire General Garner for being "weak". He wanted actual elections in Iraq. Would real elections lead to civil war? Probably no more than what is happening now.
Rummy said that the violence in Iraq is no worse than any US city... Imagine DC having 127 policeman murdered in one year. Iraq has lost in excess of 127 policeman this year.
The existing factions at war in Iraq now have even more terrorist organiztions blowing them up.

BRING IT ON

They did... and now Iraq is a battleground for AlQuada and the war against terrorism and not two different things afterall.
A reasonable person would have to admit the fluid and expanding middle east war consists of more than bin Laden trained terrorists.
Hezzbllah and others make a habit of not laying claim to their bombs.

HIGH ROAD OR LOW ROAD?

Spain has struggled to democracy through civil war and Franco and now 90% of the people say "NO more war in Iraq in our name".

The US should respect a western industrial democracy.
A neocon imperial fascist army state cares little about democracy if it interferes with emperial plans.

Little will appease the current US 'admonishtration' except "our way or the highway.

Spain has chosen the high way.
