state department and white house deny story about Powell stepping down

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State Colin Powell and his top deputy have told the White House they will not serve a second term if President Bush is re-elected, The Washington Post reported.

But a State Department spokesman vigorously denied the story on Monday. "There's no basis to the story at all," said Philip T. Reeker. "There was no such conversation."

Meanwhile, at the White House, Michael Anton, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said "the conversation didn't happen."

1. I"m not sure I buy it myself
Although it's possible the department of defense leaked it to embarrass Powell. Let's not kid ourselves, Rumsfeld really really wants to get rid of Powell so that US foreign policy can be run exclusively out of the Department of Defense. I'm not Powell's biggest fan, but he is marginally better than Rumsfeld.
