Last Monday the following letter appeared in the Cape Cod Times, and really pissed me off:
True Catholics vote according to teaching
If John Kerry and Ted Kennedy claimed to be vegan vegetarians but consistently ate cheeseburgers, they might be very nice people, but they would not be vegan vegetarians.
Politicians who claim to be Catholic but consistently vote in ways incongruent with Catholic teaching might be very nice people, but they are not Catholic.
Those who say church leaders are addressing this issue when the sexual abuse of children was not addressed are right. The ironic fact is that if priests, bishops and cardinals had been living and proclaiming Catholic teaching, the horrific sexual abuse of children and additional abuse through cover-up would not have occurred.
Congratulations to church leaders for finally asking Catholics to be Catholic.
So I responded, because I was so sick of hearing all this crap about Kerry and abortion and the church, and my letter appeared, word for word, in the paper today:
Church's true crusade is against Democrats
Megan Pettit, in her April 26 letter, offered her congratulations to Catholic leaders "for finally asking Catholics to be Catholic" and support the church's teachings on abortion.
However, as a lifelong Catholic and lifelong Democrat, I find it very interesting that this tirade is being aimed strictly at pro-choice Democrats such as John Kerry and Ted Kennedy.
If Catholic leaders are serious about requiring Catholic politicians to toe the church line, perhaps they should also focus their attentions on pro-choice Catholics on the other side of the aisle, such as former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, New York Gov. George Pataki, or California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Or perhaps the Catholic Church should direct some attention to Catholic politicians who do not support the church's teachings on other issues, such as the death penalty, the war, or assisting the poor and the needy.
Otherwise, the actions of these bishops will be exposed for what they truly are - a partisan crusade against the Democratic Party.
