Dowd: Clash of Civilizations
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/13/opinion/13DOWD.html?hp=&pagewanted=print&position=

Testifying before the Senate yesterday, General Richard Myers admitted that we're checkmated in Iraq.

"There is no way to militarily lose in Iraq," he said, describing the generals' consensus. "There is also no way to militarily win in Iraq."

Talk about the sound of one hand clapping. And they say John Kerry is on both sides of issues.

Sounding like Mr. Kerry, General Myers summed up: "This process has to be internationalized. The U.N. has to play the governance role. That's how we're, in my view, eventually going to win."

The administration's demented quest to conquer Arab hearts and minds has dissolved in a torrent of pornography denigrating other parts of the Arab anatomy. George Bush, who swept into office on a cloud of moral umbrage, now has his own sex scandal — one with far greater implications than titillating cigar jokes.

1. not only does the process have to be internationalized . . .
it has to be internationalized without the participation of the U.S. . . as long as American interests have their greedy fingers in the Iraq pie, there will never be any peace or stability in the country or the region . . . and as long as BushCo is in power, the chances of the U.S. disengaging are zero . . . the purpose of the war and the occupation have always been to establish a permanent American presence in Iraq (see the PNAC document), and now that we're there we aren't going to leave unless we somehow remove BushCo from power . . . and that, imo, is highly unlikely, if not impossible . . .

2. Maureen nailed it as she often does.
And why do you believe that it is impossible to replace Bush? I think John Kerry could very well win in a landslide once ordinary people start to pay some attention to what is going on here.

3. Because
if bushco cant effectively rig the election he will undoubtedly set the alert to red in order to prevent any elections until they can safely and effectively rig them

4. I simply don't believe that BushCo will allow Kerry to win . . .
they're not going to let something as trivial as an election remove them from power, imo . . . and since they control everything (media, voting machines, Congress, courts, foreign policy, domestic policy, etc.), I believe they're capable and evil enough to do whatever is required to stay in power . . .
