Saving hymens or souls?
American hucksters for virginity are on their way to the UK, ignoring the uniform failure of sexual abstinence programs aimed at youth

By George Monbiot
THE GUARDIAN , LONDON
Sunday, May 16, 2004,Page 9

The flame of sexual liberation may soon have to be kept alive by us geriatric delinquents. A US evangelical group has announced that next month it will be recruiting British teenagers to its campaign against sex before marriage.

More than a million US youths have taken the pledge. "Great Britain," the organizer insists, "is fascinated with the idea of sexual abstinence."

In my day such a fellow would have been horsewhipped. Yet young people are flocking to him. Is there no end to the depravity of today's youth?

Not if the US government can help it. The abstinence campaign that hopes to corrupt the morals of our once proud nation -- a group called the Silver Ring Thing -- has so far received US$700,000 in US government funds as part of President George W. Bush's personal crusade to replace sex education with Victorian values. This year he doubled the federal funding for virginity training to US$270 million.

In terms of participation, his program is working. In every other respect it's a catastrophe.

2. Haha
How I would LOVE to ask celebrities who have given their support to this issue (Kathy Lee Gifford and Kim Alexis most notably) if THEY were virgins when THEY got married? And get a truthful answer.

3. Orwell in 1984 says of forced sexual repression
that it is simply a tool to keep people in the aggressive state neccessary for control by perpetual war.

Im all for abstinence for those that want it and it worked for me as a kid but lets be sensible and pass out the condoms.

7. The US is spending money in Britain ...

to keep the British boys and girls from getting laid? Where are the Republican deficit hawks, and why aren't they pouncing on this idiotic misuse of taxpayer money?

More importantly, what has become of the once-proud British youth? Where is the brave resistance movement against this cultural imperialism? Show some inventiveness, boys and girls! The "Silver Ring Thing" programs might be a great place to meet a hottie!

10. If your idea doesn't work, bury the evidence.
What does this say about Bush's uncomfortable relationship with reality:

"When his cherished abstinence programs failed to reduce the rate of teenage births, (Bush) instructed the US Centers for Disease Control to stop gathering data."

Bush is a man born out of his time. He would have blended right in with the Vatican of the 15th and 16th centuries.
