Labour to renew links with Bush opponents
Labour to renew links with Bush opponents
By Tom Baldwin

TONY BLAIR is beginning to rebuild links with the US Democrats amid growing pressure on him to distance the Government from George Bush’s Republican Administration.

The Times has learnt that two of Labour’s most senior strategists plan to visit America this summer in order to get closer to John Kerry’s presidential campaign.

4. I think you're being a little unfair
The Labour Party is still the progressive party in the UK, and I welcome this move

6. With all due respect, why should I be fair?
Would these people be "fair" to me?
Were they "fair" to the British or Iraqi people?
I think they were wallowing in "realpolitik", and hence
I see no reason to suddenly decide that the rules of decorous
discourse now apply. The proper thing for them to do IMHO,
is to resign for their failures, and then let their successors
try to straighten out the mess as best they can. When they
have taken some accountability for their fuckups in the
non-verbal realm, I will be more than willing to move on.

2. They see the writing on the wall
George is going to lose in November, and then Blair's government will be on the black list.

3. He's hedging his bets
"The Labour leadership still believes that Mr Bush will win in November, but recent polling suggests that events in Iraq are beginning to benefit the Democratic challenger.

Although Downing Street sources say that they have been heartened by Mr Kerry’s reluctance to include Britain in attacks on US foreign policy, there is some unease over lack of contact with the Democratic candidate."

Blair knows Bush will throw him the occasional bone, to keep a second UN Security Council permanent vote on the neocon side. But now he needs a fallback position, so they're trying to get 'normal' relations between Labour and the Democrats going again. This may just consist of agreement not to criticise each other - which is what they both need most of all (active interference in another country's election can easily backfire).

5. Blair is praying for a Bush win in Nov
unlike 95% of the Labour Party, and 60-70 of the general UK pop. who think * is a dangerous idiot with no clue what to do in Iraq.

It'll serve Blair right if Kerry wins in Nov and then refuses to have anything to do with a Labour government which continues to be "led" by Blair.
