Classroom no place to show Berg tape
UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL
Overexposure

May 22, 2004

The Islamic terrorists who wantonly beheaded Nick Berg in Iraq no doubt would be delighted to know that two Grossmont school district teachers exposed their students to the graphic sounds and images of the slaying, punctuated by the death screams of the 26-year-old victim. After all, the very purpose of such barbarous atrocities is to terrorize. How better to amplify the impact of this sadistic crime than to inflict it in vivid detail on impressionable American teens?

"Those pictures, his screaming will be in my mind for the rest of my life," a tearful Tara Oels, a 17-year-old senior at Grossmont High in El Cajon, told the Grossmont school board. That is precisely the reaction sought by the savage perpetrators of this cruel act.

What is impossible to comprehend is how the two teachers – Michael Smith, a social studies teacher at Grossmont High, and Gina Grossini, a photography art teacher at El Capitan High – could have displayed such abysmal judgment. Fortunately, the two have been removed from the classroom pending an investigation and potential disciplinary action by the school board.

1. not sure which is worse.....
actually showing it or having *responsible adult teachers* who felt this was in any way appropriate or beneficial.

This makes me beyond furious! :grr:

Our young people do not need this and to have it forced on them...that school/teahers better get some damn good lawyers. The ramifications and reverberations of this will continue for a looooong time.
Idiots.

Peace

3. well
i hate to be unpopular, but i think kid's need to at some point in their life, stop rationalizing and distancing war, and making it somthing comfortable. It is part of a persons education to realise the consequences of not only the enemy's actions but their own countries. maybe then it will be a little harder to justify killing in general.

4. I am with you.
I believe too much shielding does more harm than good.
