The Victimized Rich Speak Out
Jonathan Chait

It's Tax Day! Which means it's time for the Wall Street Journal to publish a self-pitying diatribe from a rich man bemoaning the oppression he must endure. This year's contribution, by financial advisor Mike Donahue has all the trappings. You've got the insistence that hard work is solely responsible for his high income:

snip//

Next, you've got the assertions that he supports the poor on his own -- or would, if the government didn't steal his money and give it to, um, the poor:

Why then does the government feel so entitled to take my money and give it to others? Why should I have to carry so many people on my back? Call me cruel. I don't care. I give to whom I choose—but since so much is confiscated (and wasted in the process) I have little left I wish to give.

Right -- he wants to help the poor but can't because there's nothing left over from his >$250,000 salary after taxes. Obviously, after the upper-income tax cuts enacted under George W. Bush, Donahue immediately started cutting large checks to charity. I'm sure that's the case.

Finally, you have the threats to quit his horrible life as a rich man and see how the liberals like it then
:

My patience and pocketbook are reaching the breaking point. I am not for equal outcomes regardless of effort. I'm tired of being the mule. Maybe I will quit and live on the dole for awhile. I probably even have enough health issues to join the one in seven adults categorized as disabled. I've been poor and I'm not afraid to go back.

Rich conservatives are obsessed with this idea that they might quit their jobs. Ayn Rand wrote a whole book about this fantasy. Innumerable such threats accompanied Bill Clinton's upper-bracket tax hike, which was promptly followed by an explosion in upper-income growth.

Let me give you a hint, pouting rich people: We're not falling for your bluff. None of you is really going to quit your job and deny the world your precious genius because the Democrats raised your top tax bracket to 39.6%. That's because earning more than a quarter million dollars a year and having to pay a slightly higher tax rate than the average person is not actually such a horrible fate.

1. Yes, that "quitting my job because I pay too much tax" idea is ridiculous!
I'm certain that if these people are so concerned about an increase from 36% to 39.6% tax (rather a RETURN to 39.6%), if that 3.6% is sooooo important to them, so essential to maintain their life style. . . .they would certainly NOT be ready to give up the 60.4% that they will still be taking home just to avoid the 3.6% increase!!!!

It's like cutting your nose to spite your face!

Let me see: Do I want to take home 60% of a $250,000 salary or. . .NOTHING???
That's a difficult choice, indeed!

6. If you take nothing though...
You get to live in the lap of luxury in section 8 housing while using your generous welfare checks to pimp out the free Escalades they hand out with food stamps.

2. On CSPAN some "expert" was suggesting that we MUST tax the large Middle Class more ...
because there are so many of us. Never attending to the FACT that there's never been a greater disparity of income between the filthy, disgusting rich and the abject poor. Further, more and more people are falling out of the middle class as foreclosures have never been higher.

I say, TAX the rich and increase the estate tax. I was blessed to have my parents help me through my bachelors degree. I felt loved and never asked anything more from my parents financially. Imaging all the wonderful things Paris Hilton will do for the outcasts and disenfranchised when she scores all those hundreds of millions from her parent's will. :grr: :puke:

Yes, TAX the rich at 80% and they still will be able to LORD ABOVE US, buy insanely expensive houses and cars as well as vacation in Bermuda as often as they desire.

Okay Mr. rich guy, if that's how you want to play it. I'll take the bullet, and your job, if you want to push it my way. I don't have any qualms about paying more in taxes, considering that I currently take in $10,000 a year.

So let's do this: give me your job, I'll pay the taxes you don't want to, and in the process I'll support you on the federal dole.

Q3JR4.
Put up or shut up already. Also Q3JR4 can be reached at 555-...

8. Not that I'm that religious but..................
I read me some scripture, Padre! I remember that the Lord Jesus placed the beggar Lazarus in Abraham's bosom while he place the rich man in...........well, the other place.

And there was that line about: "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God."

Most of the time, I'm pretty much a Universalist; but, there are times when I do wish to consign someone to Hell!

9. There is a Pat Paulson routine that I saw about 30 years ago about America's ignored minority
The American Billionaire

He begins the sketch by talking about how they are the smallest group in the country

Then he goes into

Everyday they wake up at the crack of noon to a breakfast of prepared by their private chef
Then they have to endure a private massage

And he continues with all the perks they enjoy as if they are burdens they must endure

The sketch finishes with him telling us how they are lime everyone else "The same rain that falls on you and me falls on him."
Then the entire stage is covered with rain, except for the area the billionaire is standing in

10. "Call me cruel. I don't care."
Well, fuck you, and the horse you rode in on, pal!

And we're supposed to reach across the aisle to these gargoyles?

11. I know several people who make $250,000 or more.
In most cases, they didn't get there by themselves. They took over a successful family business their father or grandfather started. Right out of the womb, they were financially secure. Never had to worry about where their next paychecks would come from. Never had to worry about their children's future, including paying for their college education. Most of these people squeal like a pig if you suggest a tax hike. Never mind all of the tax cuts they've had since Reagan. Never mind they've benefited from the infrastructure more than any middle and lower class person. They'll play the "I create jobs" card. They don't create jobs just to be nice. The only reason they create jobs is because, in order for them to make money, they have to hire people and use their labor. If they could replace these people with robots and computers, they'd do it in a heartbeat.
