It's kind of crazy out there. So this might be a good time to say: Let's do our best as a people to catch and imprison terrorists. Let's get 'em. Let's make it our highest national priority. Let's find those who mean to end the lives of hundreds, or thousands, or tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of innocent people. Then, once it looks like all or most of the bad guys are captured, let's turn our national attention to studying how we could have done it better, more gently, more justly, more competently. But first the capture, then the criticism.

It is terrible for Mr. Mayfield that he was mistaken for a Madrid bomber. It's awful that he was arrested. He'll probably sue the government and win damages. But whatever he does, he's still alive, and the U.S. government has cleared him and apologized to him in front of the world. It is better to be alive and free after a false arrest than it is to be dead and maimed and the victim of a terror bomb. When you are dead it doesn't matter who apologizes. When you're dead you can sue nobody, though the trial lawyers association will probably change that eventually.

It is too bad Amnesty International is worried about possible U.S. insensitivity in apprehending potential terrorists. No doubt there has been and will be roughness. But mostly Amnesty is talking about this because they don't really like us, they don't know what time it is, they have to do something for a living, they think we're more competent than we are, and they still don't understand Sept. 11.
They will understand terrorism better after the next attack. But Americans don't have to wait. We were there. We can cut to the chase.

Let's aggressively, passionately and with no ambivalence pursue bad guys. Let's give as much respect, assistance and credit to the searchers as we can. And if we have to hold symposiums and commissions to criticize them for overexuberance and unnecessary roughness, let's do it later, like in 2016, when this is over and our children have been allowed to grow up.

First of all, that's not really true. The dead can sue for damages, through their heirs.

But even if her statement was true, think about it. She's barking up the wrong philosophical tree; she's actually saying a good thing about trial lawyers, i.e., that they will go the extra yard to help those who've been wronged for unfair reasons.

Whats she trying to say?

Why not just turn the world into America's own little gulag, so that all the "bad guys" are captured as soon as possible? Hey, we'll even close the concentration camps and return the world to 'freedom' when 2016 comes around--for the children!

Dear, "unnecessary roughness" is a football term, and "overexuberance" is what brings down your deportment grade on your report card. If by "symposiums and commissions" you mean international court proceedings and criminal trials, then I am in agreement. But let's do it sooner rather than later.

"It is a weird time in America." I don't know, "weird" just doesn't catch it. I prefer "psychotic" myself.

Panicky, losing it, in denial, full of ludicrous blather bordering on madness. When the arrogant put down doesn't work they project their personal fear(for their ugly careers) upon the nation.

Perhaps Ms. Noonan can be mistaken for say, a Madrid bomber, taken away from her home, housed in a horrid jail, beaten, sodomized with night sticks, denied adequate medical care, denied accessed to her lawyers, refused any contact with family members, and then released after months in captivity.
And then imagine that this was all done under the Clinton presidency.

Do you think the first words of her mouth would be, "At least I'm still alive!"

seriously by so many, I have no idea. Ok, she worked as a speechwriter for Reagan and Bush. What was her all-time signature line? ........"Read my lips, no new taxes!" - uttered by Poppy Bush in his 1988 nomination acceptance speech. We all know now that this one line probably backfired more than any other in the history of presidential politics. So why is she still considered a genius? BTW, in case anyone thinks I am dumping on her because she is a woman, I feel the same way about Bill "Nattering Nabobs of Negativism" Safire.

Peggy Noonan demonstrated to me just different our views are when she was on the Chris Matthew show Hardball (no, I was not on the show). Just before a commercial break, she uttered that Liberal concerns with past geopolitical circumstances which led the Reagan Administration to support Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran to allow deliverance of chemical WMD along with supplying targeting information on where it was to be used was a non starter. Personally, I could not think of a geopolitical circumstance that would allow me to give Saddam Hussein WMD of any sort nor supply targets on where the WMD was to be used. It would be like giving Hitler the poison gas used in concentration camps and then the addresses of the Jews it was to be used on. The whole thought was appalling to say the least.
Now, she proposes that Mr Mayfield should be thankful that he is still alive after his ordeal and just let us get on with our hunt for terrorists as though nothing awful had happened. Given her past geopolitical circumstances argument from previous interviews, my guess is that she would still feel the same way if he died while incarcerated and that we would have to just get over that as well. Just how many innocent people would she tolerate being jailed, tormented, abused, or even killed before she would even consider something is amiss. My guess is that there would be no upper limit which makes her far more dangerous than any terrorist I know of to date.
