GOP takes credit for New York Times hit
Edited on Tue May-18-10 11:50 AM by BrklynLiberal
Riiiiiiiiight. There was lots of "extensive, independent reporting" on the part of that political hack Raymond Hernandez.

when he was asked directly ..this AM, on NPR, where he got the info for the story and if he was fed anything from the repukes, he categorically denied that the Republican candidate had anything to do with it.

Pulling back the curtain on journalistic sausage-making usually hidden from voters, a Republican Senate candidate is taking credit for the front-page New York Times story accusing Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of “plainly untrue” remarks about Vietnam service.

But a New York Times spokeswoman said: "Anyone reading it can tell that it was the product of extensive independent reporting — including our FOIA of his military records."

The campaign of World Wrestling Entertainment co-founder Linda McMahon, who is seeking the Republican nomination to run against Blumenthal, is doing little to discourage suggestions it provided the sort of opposition research to The Times that is known around campaigns as an “oppo dump.”

and where the hell was this "top notch researcher" during the chicken hawk administration of 2000-2008???

This smells so much like swift-boating that I am looking for Bob Perry to be hiding behind the curtain.

2. A telling nugget from the OP link
The linked story (Politico) has this:

Making the claim more explicitly, McMahon's campaign website has re-posted, as an "In Case You Missed It," a blog entry by Kevin Rennie of South Windsor, a lawyer and a former Republican state senator and representative:

“McMahon Strikes Blumenthal In NYT Article ... The piece, fed to the paper by the Linda McMahon Senate campaign, is accompanied by a chilling 2008 video of Blumenthal blithely making the false claim. ... The Blumenthal Bombshell comes at the end of more than 2 months of deep, persistent research by Republican Linda McMahon's Senate campaign. It gave the explosive Norwalk video recording to The Times. This is what comes of $16 million, a crack opposition research operation.”

3. This morning I heard, with my own lying ears, Hernandez categorically deny this to someone who
Edited on Tue May-18-10 11:06 AM by BrklynLiberal
specifically asked if he had been fed by the McMahon campaign...

He was actually whining about all the hard work he had done to "discover" this information. In fact he used the term
"dogged research". Almost sounded downright insulted that someone would doubt his veracity.

So, speaking of credibility....Mr Hernandez! yoo-hoo Mr. Hernandez..time for your closeup..

"The piece, fed to the paper by the Linda McMahon Senate campaign,"

4. It is downright pathetic and disgusting that there are people here who
Edited on Tue May-18-10 11:19 AM by BrklynLiberal
are so easily manipulated by this obvious "swiftboating" type of attempt by McMahon...

That campaign planted the story, helped to make it a big deal..the timing was so Rovian, that he MUST have been involved.

and perhaps even Bob Perry financed it..

And yet..there are people who are just so insulted..and so distressed by this man ONCE saying something that might not have been 100% accurate.

How many of you could pass that test???.

How sad, very sad.

7. The Times reported that there were MULTIPLE occasions when . . .
. . . Richard Blumenthal both flat-out lied, and falsey implied, that he had served in Vietnam or came back from Vietnam to be mistreated.

That does offend me, but I have a greater sensitivity to the issue. I served as an infantry platoon leader in the jungles of Vietnam, was wounded by AK fire, spent 18 months hospitalized, and was retired from the Army for partial disability. I knew more than 60 guys who were killed there, including two training roommates--one of whom was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. So I can't help being deeply offended when someone claims undeserved credit for having suffered and sacrificed in-country.

Some on this board have said they could never vote for Blumenthal now. My own view is that if I were voting in that election, I would vote for him simply because he is the candidate most capable of doing a good job, and allowing his opponent to win would be against my own political and personal interest.

And, btw, what makes this different from swiftboating is that in this case, the information about Blumenthal is true.

8. Consider the source.
Edited on Tue May-18-10 11:53 AM by BrklynLiberal
From what I have heard and seen..there was ONE occasion....

And I specifically said "swiftboating" type of attack..knowing that there WAS a distinction between this and what happened to Kerry.

I guess the lies about Blumenthal will be in the details of just how many times the repukes will claim this happened...and exactly what his claims were...

5. When this "broke" last night I said it was a hit piece
Two posters immediately jumped on me and criticized me for saying that.

6. I agree with you...
This is same sort of crap that was meant to set up the downfall of Spitzer.

There is no bottom to what the repukes will do to win.
