Shocker: Only 6 Out of 100 Applicants Can Get a Job at McDonald's -- It's Time for Politicians to Stop Ignoring Our Jobs Crisis
McDonald's just hired 62,000 new workers, out of 1 million applications.

May 4, 2011 |

Within a week, as the news and analysis of Osama bin Laden's demise fades, the American people will focus once again on the issues that matter most to their daily lives. For most Americans, that includes the jobs market and the state of our economy.

But no one is talking about jobs. Except for American voters, that is. Does anyone in Washington care -- or even know, for that matter -- that jobs and the economy are still the most important issues to voters?

The April employment report will be released on Friday. There may be a dip in the current 8.8 percent unemployment rate and a jump in private sector job growth, but we are not likely to see real progress. Keep in mind that our economy needs to add at least 150,000 new jobs every month just to keep pace with new entrants into the job market. While other economic indicators, such as the stock market and GDP growth, are rising, employment is lagging far behind. In fact, job growth after this recession is the weakest on record. Ultimately, job security matters the most to the American people.

We are now more than four months into the new congress, and discounting partisan rhetoric, congress and the administration have paid scant attention to the plight of the unemployed. Leaders of both parties would be wise to heed the vision of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign that toppled a clueless incumbent: It's the economy, stupid. ...............(more)

4. 62,000 jobs isn't bad, however
1 million applicants is.

I recently had a conversation with my state representative about the corporate/rich tax cuts my governor wants to push through to create jobs. I said this:

--

When it comes to taxes, reducing the burden on working class families is one sure way to get the economy fired up again. Working class families are the consumers of our economy, and the more money they have they more they'll spend - creating demand for goods and services, which in turn creates demand for more jobs, which leads to a feedback loop.

I was looking over my financial projections the other day, and discussing them with my wife. She idly mentioned "then we'll get 1000 students and it'll be awesome." I plugged those into my equations and I hope to have 1000 students some day, because then I'd need to hire some full time instructors other than me. Tax breaks for my business aren't going to help me create jobs. If my business had no tax burden, but I had only 50 students, I wouldn't have the revenue to support a single employee outside myself and my wife. However, if the people of our city had some extra spending money, I may be able to pick up more students.

--

Despite what the GOP says, no amount of tax breaks will allow me to hire people. I could get sizable tax refunds, but the bottom line is: I do not have the revenue to support hiring employees. If the GOP wants me to hire employees, then they need to give my target market the tax breaks that the corporations are salivating over. When my target market has more money to spend, they'll be more apt to buy my services. THEN i'll be able to create jobs because demand will outpace supply.

5. I have a family friend that works as a cook for many year in a Applebees type restuarant. He has
been a hard worker and there for years. He does whatever they ask him to do. He wants to move up into manager position. Many times he is doing the job. Recently they helped him fill out a new application. He is getting close to management. However, here is the kicker his credit isn't good. He pays of $400 a month just in health care for he and his child. He was in the hospital overnight and it was well over $4,000.00. His health program is terrible but it's better than nothing. So I don't think they have a right to check someone's credit.
