The Health Crisis Killing Manly Men
Guys who eat junk food, don't wear sunscreen, or go to the doctor when they're sick are seen as real men, but their attitudes are sending them to an early grave. Tony Dokoupil on the advertising push that could make men as healthy as women—and even make America competitive in the 21st century.

During drive time one afternoon this spring, a Boston National Public Radio station tried to drum up interest in men's health, a subject that proved poorly matched for a chat show. Just two callers phoned in during the 20-minute segment. One, "Jeff," asked a tongue-in-cheek question about "man-colds." The other, a female emergency room doctor, recounted incredulously how men in the middle of obvious heart attacks—sweating, clutching their

The Health Crisis Killing Manly Men
Compared to women, Mahalik finds, guys are less likely to wear sunscreen, take their pills, accept bed rest, administer self-exams, develop a network of emotional support, mix in some healthy food, or exercise safely. Alternatively, he is vastly more likely to snuff himself out by smoking and drinking, drinking and driving, drugging and sexing, committing suicide or getting killed, or dying in virtually every conceivable way except childbirth. The reason for all this "stupid stuff," says Mahalik, is men "don't want to be seen as pussies or wimps."

Near the end of the segment on the NPR show that couldn't find a single man to talk seriously about his health, one of the expert guests, a colleague of Dr. Hines' at Clark, told the story of a construction worker who accidentally shot himself with a nail gun. Rather than run for help after he sent a reverse-barbed spike through his palm, the man sat down and calmly yanked it out, as other workers looked on. "He's the man," one later explained, and that kind of admiration is to die for.

8. Not so much.
In some parts of Africa the cultural belief spread that sex with a female virgin would cure the male body of HIV. It of course flies against evidence but it was/is a cultural phenomenon.

The cultural phenomenon that "real men" eat shitty bacon/sausage/beef laden diets, drink hard, hate vegetables and avoid going to the doctor is very real in this country and it is disabling and killing our men. It needs to be addressed and counteracted because the toll it takes on lives and families is very real.

9. If you want to talk about diet or superstition, then do that.

There is no need to drag gender stereotypes in by blathering about "real men". I don't suppose you would think well of it if we started blathering about "real women" and what their characteristics are or ought to be.

4. Define "Early"
Dad is 78, has been widowed these 11 years, during which time he totally neglected and abused his health.

He has chronic and irreversible damage to several major systems in the body.

He's terrified of doctors, surgery, pills, and the like.

He will probably live another 5 years at least.

I think my mother died of the strain of getting him to "behave". It's now my sister's job. I fear for her health.

5. I feel for my daughter-in-law
My son has always rebelled against better judgment and I didn't beat him enough. Now, my poor d-i-l is frantically trying to get him to take better care of himself. She's amazing, though. When he refuses to do something she asks, "How much do I get when you die?" or something equally disturbing. It gets his attention and he does what she asks.

6. Either your mom monitored his health
or he doesn't really want to live anymore without your mom. For all we know, he might be dying of a broken heart.

Broken-hearted people are prone to neglecting their health.
