Attack underlines America's crumbling authority and shows it can guarantee the safety of no one

Robert Fisk
20 August 2003

What UN member would ever contemplate sending peace-keeping troops to Iraq now? The men who are attacking America's occupation army are ruthless, but they are not stupid. They know that President George Bush is getting desperate, that he will do anything - that he may even go to the dreaded Security Council for help - to reduce US military losses in Iraq. But yesterday's attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad has slammed shut the door to that escape route.

2. Bush ask for help?
Surely Fisk jests a bit there. Lil George don't need nobody's help, not now, not never! He's one of those macho, lone-wolf, plays-by-his-own-rules kinda guy who doesn't ask for anything as sissy as "help." Besides, the frothing-at-the-mouth imperialists who advised him into this mess have already slammed the door on any help that might have been forthcoming from the cheese eatin' surrender monkeys in France or the Old Europe folks in Germany. And those two countries are the ones that would be able to send the best equipped, best trained troops with the best chance of making an impact.

We are officially reduced to hoping that Germany and France will overlook the incredible bad manners of the current administration, and help us out in Iraq in spite of ourselves.

3. Why do we have to go to the UK to hear the truth?
It's worth paying on the Independent site just to read Fisk!
