By Carl Bernstein, Legendary Washington Post Reporter Who Uncovered The Watergate Scandal
THE Kelly suicide saga was yesterday reduced to a story about the shrunken stature of Tony Blair.
The once invincible Prime Minister, stripped now of the majesty of his office and dragged into the dock of a dingy courtroom at the foot of Fleet Street. The gravitas of his person and his position lost in this suitably seedy venue.
Consider the courtroom itself. More like a dull classroom than a seat of judicial might: Swiss cheese ceiling, filthy carpet, empty bookcases and cheap chairs from some Office Depot outlet, almost all occupied yesterday by the ink-stained wretches and broadcast journalists so despised (not always unreasonably) by the occupants of 10, Downing Street and The White House.
Plasma TV screens on either side of witness stand announced the day's proceedings: "Thursday, 28th August 2003 (10:30 am), Mr Tony Blair (called); examined by Mr. Dingemans." Mr Blair.
Not Prime Minister Blair.
