YAY Sen. Durbin, YAY Illinois
Hell i'm stayin in Chicago.

DURBIN IS NOT CONVINCED GONZALES IS SUITABLE FOR AG

BY BECKY MALKOVICH
THE SOUTHERN

WASHINGTON -- Testimony during a confirmation hearing did little to assuage doubts held by Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin regarding the ability of Alberto Gonzales to serve as U.S. attorney general.

..............

"This chapter of the American war on terrorism could turn out to be as historic an embarrassment to the U.S. as the Japanese interment was during World War II," Durbin said. "The images of Abu Ghraib will serve as recruitment posters for terrorists for years to come."

..............

Gonzales' record in Texas government is also of concern to Durbin, particularly Gonzales' role in some 59 death penalty cases in the state. Before becoming counsel to the president in 2001, Gonzales served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Texas.

..............

Finally, Durbin said he was disturbed by an answer Gonzales gave, or failed to give, during the confirmation hearing.

4. The Gonzales appointment sends the wrong messages
Regardless of the degree of responsibility Gonzales bears for the torture of prisoners, he is at the center of this contentious issue. His appointment as our nation's highest law enforcement officer sends a message to the world that the U.S. government is standing behind its policy of torture rather than holding accountable those responsible for a scandal that has brought shame on our nation.

It also reinforces the more odious provisions of the PATRIOT ACT, which Gonzales adamantly supports. Bush is sending a message to the American people that his administration intends to continue its erosion of Constitutional liberties.

If it is in any way possible for the United States of America to descend into fascism, we are witnessing its beginnings.

As a side note, Senators Durbin and Obama make me proud to be a lifelong resident of Illinois. If we can only regain control of the House, the blemish of Dennis Hastert can be removed from Illinois.

5. It's not fair that Illinois has two strong Democratic senators --
-- and most other states don't even have one.

8. progressivedancer --
-- I intended it as a compliment -- I'd take Durbin and Obama over just about any other state's pair of senators any day.

7. "The Republican Party in Illinois is in deep water and far from shore."
A quote from the state's top republican.

10. Hi
Sorry Old Crusoe, my last post was for Rose Siding, he/she wanted to move my post to LBN or something and I was like "okay."

By the way thanks for the compliment. I think that what's going on here in Illinois is a foreshadowing of things to come for the rest of the nation. The birthplace of the Republican party, is drowning Republicans and conservatives off Lake Michigan.

As a Buddhist, I believe whole-heartedly in Karma. So far the Republicans are not doing very well.
