Way Too Much God
(Proof that anyone can lurch into the truth, and momentarily find themself on solid ground.)

Was the president's speech a case of "mission inebriation"?

PEGGY NOONAN

The president's speech seemed rather heavenish. It was a God-drenched speech. This president, who has been accused of giving too much attention to religious imagery and religious thought, has not let the criticism enter him. God was invoked relentlessly. "The Author of Liberty." "God moves and chooses as He wills. We have confidence because freedom is the permanent hope of mankind . . . the longing of the soul."

It seemed a document produced by a White House on a mission. The United States, the speech said, has put the world on notice: Good governments that are just to their people are our friends, and those that are not are, essentially, not. We know the way: democracy. The president told every nondemocratic government in the world to shape up. "Success in our relations will require the decent treatment of their own people."

The speech did not deal with specifics--9/11, terrorism, particular alliances, Iraq. It was, instead, assertively abstract.

"We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands." "Across the generations we have proclaimed the imperative of self government. . . . Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation's security, and the calling of our time." "It is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in the world."

Ending tyranny in the world? Well that's an ambition, and if you're going to have an ambition it might as well be a big one. But this declaration, which is not wrong by any means, seemed to me to land somewhere between dreamy and disturbing. Tyranny is a very bad thing and quite wicked, but one doesn't expect we're going to eradicate it any time soon. Again, this is not heaven, it's earth.

1. and another thing
"We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands."

You know, our freedoms were never at risk. A bunch of thugs flew an airplane into some buildings and got very lucky and killed a bunch of us. That had nothing to do with our freedoms, any more than Timothy McVeigh blowing up the federal building in Oklahoma had anything to do with our "freedoms".

Our freedoms are only at risk from the very kind of people we are being told to despise: religious bigots who want their 2000 year old goat herder world views transcribed into modern law. Our freedoms are at risk from the very people the American constitution was drafted to protect us from: our own countrymen who without law would put us in prison without charging us and keep us there without a trial. Our own countrymen who think that what I do with my body is any business of theirs, and who think that I owe my assets and life to the state if I'm not married with 2.5 children and go to church three times a week.

Our freedoms were never at risk because of Iraq or because of terrorists. The brainless twits who mindlessly repeat that drivel need a wake up call. If you think your freedoms aren't at risk now just because you aren't as brown as the people whose freedoms you are so happy to give up by proxy, think again. You're next sitting their in your smug little gated community world. If you piss off the wrong person you will be on a no-fly list. If you talk to the wrong person or give money to the wrong charity you will just fucking disappear and nothing in the law of the United States will save you, and it doesn't matter what color you are.

I don't want to hear the word "freedoms" come out of someone's mouth fueled by the intellect of a slow third grader.
