Ohio before Bush* : even Burger King had a signing bonus
This was a front page story in Sunday's Dallas Morning News. The intro paragraph lead is one of the best I've read in awhile - it pretty much sums up the situation.
============================================

Hatred for Bush simmers in Ohio
Democrats say it's more than disagreement; GOP calls it irrational

By WAYNE SLATER / The Dallas Morning News

CANTON, Ohio – Johnnie Maier remembers driving by the Burger King a few years ago and seeing a sign with the message: Help Wanted, $150 signing bonus.

"How good is the economy when Burger King has to put a help wanted signing bonus on the front marquee?" he said. "The employables were employed."

No more. Three years of recession coupled with decades of a shifting global economy have left the Rust Belt reeling – and have fed an intense antipathy here for George W. Bush.

snip--

The nation's only rubber glove factory in Massillon shut down two years ago, sending its operation to Malaysia and India. Last year, Mr. Bush visited Canton's biggest employer, the Timken Co., to pitch his tax cut as a boon to the economy. A few days later, Timken announced it was cutting 900 jobs.

2. In the north suburbs of Chicago, BK had to hire busses to get
workers from poorer neighborhoods in Chicago to work at the fastfood chain up here. Everywhere I went there were help wanted signs on the doors.

Not today.

If this is also happening in Ohio, that state could be in play come November.

3. Back in 1998, the White Castle near my home in NJ had a sign in the window
"Start today for $7.25 an hour!"

Thanks, bush...

4. And the last Burger King in Chicago's Loop
closed this month.

The nearest operating one is three miles from downtown, I believe.

5. And farther into the article, our very own...

Go a little further down the article.....

"The economy is absolutely terrible," said Jeff Seemann, who is
running to unseat a long-term GOP incumbent in Congress. "Other
than my parents, I can't find many Republicans who will defend
George Bush. He ran as a compassionate conservative and doesn't
govern like one."

That's Jeff Seemann. Many of us here know him as AWD. Nice to
see that he's getting good press, even in Texas.

BTW, he could sure use folks' support for his Congressional run!

6. read the article further down

Some of you might remember Jeff Seemanns as AWD. He is running for congress on Ohio against a republican incumbant.
He could use some help in the fundraising department. It seems the democratic party has decided they can't retake congress so they aren't trying very hard. They are also having trouble raising money (gee wonder why, coul it be that like me, people have realized that the party sucks in money, continues to cater to special interests and acts like appeasers to the right so they can keep their jobs?). So if you would like to join the fight on a grassroots level, check out Jeff's web page.

7. "GOP calls it irrational"
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 10:40 AM by NicoleM
That just cracks me up. These are the people who spent the better part of a decade and millions of taxpayer dollars trying to find *anything* they could use against Clinton, and WE'RE the irrational ones. :eyes:

8. during the last Bush recession I noticed a trend... aging workers
at the fast food joints.

A couple of years ago... I noticed the same trend re-emerging.

9. Giving signing bonuses in an industry makes it
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 10:47 AM by Skidmore
upscale...look what happened to other jobs where signing bonuses were chic. They're overseas. What's next? Stock options?

At this rate, you'll have to go to China for your next Whopper.

Personally, everyone should plain old shut BK and Mickey D's down...
