Blix: Iraq war was illegal
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/story.jsp?story=498039

snip:
An unrepentant Mr Blair will refuse to apologise for the war in Iraq, insisting the world is a better place without Saddam Hussein in power. He will point to the wider benefits of the Iraq conflict, citing Libya's decision to give up its weapons of mass destruction, but warn that the world cannot turn a blind eye to the continuing threat from WMD

......what relevance to the invasion of Iraq is the Libyan decision to forego its WMD's? Libya was in negotiations for years with the West to "rejoin the community of nations" in regards to the Pan AM 103 incident and finally decided to pay-off the victims families.

What doesn't get much mention in the WMD discussion is how Pakistans rogue nuclear scientist Mr. Khan, was proliferating nuclear weapon technology to all who wanted it and Pakistan happens to be an ally. Is that also a "wider benefit" of the Iraq invasion Mr. Blair/Bush?

1. It will just get blamed on Clinton....
ABC news tonights story on Nuclear blackmarket said that the US was 'aware' of Dr Kahns nuclear shopping mart for the past 7 years, but chose not to do anything.

2. My husband and I were talking WMD's yesterday and he made the
point that when the US or our interests have been the victim of terrorists attacks, they have never used WMD's. That doesn't take away from the threat obviously but when they strike us they use airplanes or suicide bombers.

Can anyone name a terrorist attack in which WMD's were used (besides when Saddam used them on Iraqi's)?

5. How about in Japan a few years back....
some rogue group let loose cyanide in the subway in Tokyo..

Also, if you count bombing population centers as "terrorist attacks" - Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

7. OK, I forgot Japan
but the group was not Al-Queda or "traditional terrorists" that want to strike out at America. Weren't they a Japanese terrorist group? But you are correct, that is one attack that included WMD's.

8. But chem/bio agents are NOT WMDs. They can, under optimal conditions,
kill a fair number of people, but the only true weapons of MASS DESTRUCTION are nukes. We tend to forget that in current discussions.

A while back there was a lot of talk about 'neutron bombs', (I imagine some evil bastards are still working on that sort of project)...they do not actually 'destroy' anything other than the lives of critters.
As such, it might be tempting to call them WMDs but the characterization would be erroneous.

9. You're exactly correct...
I've even fallen into that stupid trap.

A Weapon of Mass Destruction is a nuclear weapon.

4. Unequivocal statement from Blix
The former chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix has declared that the war in Iraq was illegal, dealing another devastating blow to Tony Blair.

Mr Blix, speaking to The Independent, said the Attorney General's legal advice to the Government on the eve of war, giving cover for military action by the US and Britain, had no lawful justification. He said it would have required a second United Nations resolution explicitly authorising the use of force for the invasion of Iraq last March to have been legal.

His intervention goes to the heart of the current controversy over Lord Goldsmith's advice, and comes as the Prime Minister begins his fightback with a speech on Iraq today.

I guess this has no meaning in the US, where our leaders care nothing for the rule of law.

Unfortunately, this is yet another story that will disappear into the ether- The chimp and the poodle have worked verrry hard to discredit Blix over the past year+, and y'all know how hard memes are to kill.
