is LaRouche a left wingnut or a right wingnut?
the freepers say he's a socialist and apparentely he belonged to the Socialist Workers Party at one point. However shortly after he seemed to take a hardline anti-Communist stance and since then he's been all over the place. And I won't even get into his tin foil hat theories about AIDS and the British Royal Family...

1. His insanity transcends categorical labels.
He's just utterly mad. Let's leave it at that.

3. He's just an extremist
On which ends? Its neither and its both. He thinks that environmentalists are all out to lunch. He thinks AIDS can be spread through shaking hands. He is anti-gay and anti-Semetic. On the other hand, he favors a strong social welfare safety net.

So many of his other ideas are just mystifyingly complex, difficult to pin down, overly intellectualized gobbledygook which don't fit neatly into any ideological categories.

I am the first person to bitch about people crying wolf about Anti-Semitism, but I regard LaRouche as an anti-semite.

21. well
I define anti-semitism much more broadly than that, BUT, I don't support a single thing Israel does policy wise, and I think it is a rather oppressive country...LaRouche is fond of saying that Israel is a puppet government of the british monarchy, and that the anti-defamation league is like the jews who demanded christ's death...maybe he isn't anti-semitic, I believe he is

here is a good boi on LaRouche

19. it's like infinity in mathematics
as numbers get really really large, they approach infinity.

or, in the other direction if you're going below zero - really really large negative numbers also approach infinity - but oddly enough, not "negative" infinity, just "infinity"

i.e., the same condition is reached by going in apparently diametrically opposed directions.

in some ways politics is similar - at some point the wackiness is all the same.

6. Left, right, not crucial.
I don't know about those labels. LaRouche is against abortion rights and the death penalty. He is for strong state regulation and nationalizing the Federal Reserve. His economic views are not socialist per se, but are influenced by traditional social democracy--they are best described as "dirigist," meaning pro-state ordering of the economy. I suspect that many of the "conspiracy theories" are deliberately exaggerated in order to gain a militant yet small following. Much of their investigations of neo-conservatism and secret societies have some validity that shouldn't be dismissed.

7. I think if LaRouche just stuck to economics, he'd be a Leftist wet dream.
Socially... I don't even think you can call it right-wing... it's just crazy.

by Eric Hoffer.   Sometimes it doesn't matter if you're a right wing crackpot or a left wing crackpot; it's the crackpottery per se that's important. ;)

10. Wow. I haven't heard Hoffer's name in a long time...
...takes me back to the era of Walter Keane's 'big eyed child paintings' and when the 'Peanuts' cartoon strip was fresh.
I liked Hoffer. Straight talkin' longshoreman type.
No big point to this post, just thanks for the memories.

LaRouchites are the Scientologists of American politics. One day you run into one of them (the chances of this happening increase exponentially if you live near a college campus) and they start talking to you about a New Bretton Woods and a return to New Deal economics, and the next thing you know you're being told that Queen Elizabeth II is the worlds biggest narco-trafficker and that she ordered the hit on JFK and the Oklahoma City bombing. There's a certain obsessive quality surrounding the man's wide-eyed followers himself who, though perhaps well intentioned, ascribe to LaRouche the singular honor of being America's premier political and economic intellectual. To them, no one else is even in the remote vicinity.

A good rule of thumb, folks: if someone is telling you that they alone possess all the answers to your or anyone else's problems, or that their Great Leader does, it's a sure bet that some heavy megalomania is going down.

13. LaRouch is big on campus yes
I go to University of Illinois at Chicago and see alot of Lyndon LaRouche literature and workers. One supporter wanted me to buy the literature but then gave it to me for free. I asked him if LaRouche was more of a conservative or liberal. He said, "well it's not really a left-wing, right-wing sorta thing." Since he didn't give me a straight answer I never even looked at the literature.

On a related note, there was a black woman trying to plug for some Republican. Don't remember the exact details but I saw "republican" under the politician's name. At that moment she asked me if I'd support him. "I'm more of a leftist," I said, and walked off. My friend who was with me said that she roller he eyes at me as I left. HAHAH. Freeper!
