Is Schwazaggner Really Popular?
This thread is mainly for people from California. I am not from California, but have been interested in the Recall since it began. Recently California voter passed two propositions that Schwazaggner wanted passed. The media has given him much credit and some have said he is the most popular politican in Californina in a long time. To degree I think this praised is overrated. I have not seen anyone in the media really examine the fact that the propositions had Democratic support or that Schwazaggner threatened "Armaggdon cuts" if the propositions did not pass. In addition, they have not mention that the people did not really have a choice in the matter in that they were already in debt and their was little that could be done. Also, noone has asked if the fact that each proposition had to be passed for the other to go into effect had anything to do with the outcome. I somewhat think the media is giving Schwazaggner such credit because they want to beat the Democrats into submission. Could someone from California give me their opinion? One final question is does anyone from California believe Schwazaggner won the election for governor due to media lies and omissions?

1. high profile dems in california helped pass those resolution
I'm not from California but can tell you that Dianne Feinstein, the democratic congresswoman who is usually pretty liberal and Gray Davis both came out publicly (even on tv) to support the propositions. Make of that what you will but it's nt very often you will see that kind of support from the opposing party.

3. it may be the right thiing to do for Cali
I don't live there and haven't followed the situation that much so I might agree. One thing I found odd is how much clamor was made out of the car tax. Did I hear right tht it was only like $160 a year per automobile? That's like fifty five cents a day or something. What was so important about repealing that?

4. From What I Heard

I think they tripled the car tax overnight to try and fix the deficit.

5. so it was originally less than $100 per year
per car? I understand that tripling anythiing can cause quite a backlash but it still seems reasonable compared to some other alternatives, like tripling property taxes or increased sales taxes and the like.

7. It's actaully based on the blue book value of the car
So if you own a brand new luxury car, you would see a huge increase, an aging Toyota would see a negligable increase. My car tax went I think from $35 to $50. BFD!

This means the folks hit with the biggest car tax increase tend to be the loudest right wingers - the one with the brand new overpriced status symbols (and with the largest sense of self-entitlement).

8. that's not surprising
I must have gotten my numbers from somethng stating the "average car tax".

I would imagine if you could spend eighty grand on a hummer you could afford the car tax, especially if you are smart enough to get the tax break on those pieces of sh**!!

9. Note it says "average" not "median"
Hence the number are skewed by a very small number of very expensive cars

6. No obvious opposition
helped - these things will pass if the usual loud FUD is missing.

This means the fact that the republican minority is no longer trying their best to sabotage the state is the reason. You can bet your Yak that ANY Democrat that put something like this on the ballot would get beat up by these folks severely.

10. Yes, and CA dems made him popular
Ok, so Gray Davis will never be called the greatest governor, or even close, but many dems jumped from a sinking ship. Instead of clearly laying out the issues and what got us into this mess (a big factor being Enron and the price gouging that took place here), they were constantly on the defensive end of repuke attacks. That car tax thing was EVERYWHERE and so overblown as to be laughable. To add insult to injury, the dems then gave the kind of support to an opposition party not seen in recent times; they helped push Ah-nold's propositions and have coddled the governator to such a point that I cannot believe that they could legitimately run anyone against him in '06. Geez, you think living in CA they wouldn't be so damn star-struck. Celebrity whores.
