Gay GOP Group Challenges Bush on Marriage
Log Cabin Republicans to Air TV Ad in D.C., 7 States
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 10, 2004; Page A06

In a dramatic break with President Bush, a prominent group of gay Republicans that supported him four years ago is launching a $1 million advertising campaign today attacking the administration for trying to ban same-sex marriage.

The ad, by the Log Cabin Republicans, uses grainy footage of Vice President Cheney saying during the 2000 campaign that the matter should be left to the states.

Bush's decision to endorse a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage was "the line in the sand" for the 27-year-old group, which has never run a campaign ad, said Executive Director Patrick Guerriero. He said he had warned the White House as Bush edged toward supporting an amendment that "despite our historic loyalty to the party and the president, we would be forced to speak out if gay and lesbian families were going to be used as wedge issues in swing states."

The group's move, which shatters the fragile alliance between the president and his strongest backers in the gay community, could undermine efforts to renew the "compassionate conservative" appeal he used four years ago.

1. Memo from the desk of Executive Director Patrick Guerriero
Dear fellow Log Cabin Republicans,

In light of the recent decision of President Bush, I urge all members to comply with the following action list compiled at the executive board meeting. This will go into effect before our meeting with the RNC. Dave the RNC assistant, will be meeting us, with the their IT guy so we can voice our displeasure.

Till further notice:

No decorating services are to be taken on with Republican clients.

If in the middle of a job now, tell the client you have a sick headache. The men working on the Cheney account on retainer are exempt.

No makeovers.....that means you, First Lady of snottyland!

Our "Traditional Values Men", do not bring the hubby to the meetings we will be having with the RNC, they do not look kindly on the "househusbands" involved with work. They may be kind of bitchy anyway, so it's good that they not come.

We need cookies, lots and lots of cookies. This is where your househusband can show his concern about the breadwinner of the house, as we need to ply the RNC with yummies. Sam, have Mikey make those double chocolate squares. Any RNC staffer who resists those is a robot!

For the "Bodybuilders Bar Club", please refrain from wearing your most exposing outfits to the RNC meetings. Just something business-like, that shows that nice bod off; we don't want to give the cow away now to certain RNC window shoppers.

Like any big entity, the RNC has scads of people, and so we must make sure we know who the descision makers are, so pressure Dave with the cookies for the phone list. He would have it since part of his many duties is manning the phone. This also could come in usefull later in the "Republican Interiors" feature article for our publication "The Chatterbox".

We have many things to be thankfull for, and we see this as just a itty-bitty bump, that we must get over to become full-fledged Reuplicans that can use the main door of the coming convention, and not the kitchen service entrance like the last convention. We are an integral part of the party, and the RNC knows it...so much so, they have arrainged for us to move our meeting rooms from that room in the basement of the Patent Office to the extra space during the renovations of a building that they will tell us about at our upcomming meeting.

In closing my fellow LCR's, happy faces, and happy talk. We are always looking at the bright side of things, not like those sad-sack other homosexuals, who just don't get what we are trying to accomplish.

Truly Yours, and secret air paw and meow.
Executive Director
Patrick Guerriero
