Michigan defeats attempt to ban gay marriage
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 10:32 AM by Mari333
Go Michigan!

But other lawmakers denounced a drive, they believe, to restrict the rights of some Michigan citizens. "We should be more concerned about whether we have a job in the morning, rather than who we sleep with at night," declared Rep. Alexander Lipsey (D-Kalamazoo).

7. Michigan has been very fortunate.
During the Eisenhower years, Michigan had Soapy Williams for a Governor. Even when it has had Republican Governors, they've been decent people by and large. Bill Milliken was an excellent Republican Governor. Even Romney wasn't as much of a disaster as Republicans in other states.

Then there was Engler. :puke: It'll take this state a long, long time to recover from the damage of the Engler maladminstiration.

5. Could be
He was one of the few Repubs that voted against it. I heard in on WDET (Public Radio) this morning. He did sound like a decent guy.

8. He's a very conservative guy.
And he's very aware that his political career is pretty much fucked, too.

He said something to the effect of "Yeah, my political career is over, but this is a matter of conscience: I watched African-Americans get screwed and didn't do anything about it, and I'm not going to do that again."

His Church, I believe, has kicked him out, and the religious right machinery has churned against him.

Super-props to Lorence Wenke.
