Christian Civic League seeks to 'out' gay lawmakers

The Christian Civic League of Maine is asking supporters for information about the sexual orientation of legislators and other political leaders so it can post the information on its Internet site.

In his daily newsletter that is posted on the league's Web site, Executive Director Michael Heath asked league members to -- quote -- "E-mail us tips, rumors, speculation and facts."

Heath said he will write about political leaders' sexual orientation because it is of "fundamental importance" in the debate over issues involving sexuality.
But Heath's intentions have drawn outrage from critics.

Betsy Smith of the Maine Lesbian Gay Political Alliance said the league is trying to force gays and lesbians to reveal their sexual orientation whether they want to or not, even though it has no bearing on public policy.

Not a lot of decency about this over there in freeperland (there were a few). Karma is a bitch.

1. Just wanted to thank you for noting that there were a few decent
voices on 'the other side'
It really bothers me when sometimes we let our disgust with this misadministration come out in ways that reflect poorly on all of us; kudos to you for being truly fair...:toast:

By making noise at a level that obscures their lack of numbers. Next thing you know, the crowd follows.

5. To paraphrase the Firesign Theatre
Outing gay lawmakers doesn't really sound like something that Christ would do.

12. Didn't you know?
Jesus likes "in your face" scorn and legal prohibitions on nonprocreative sex, booze, gambling and miscegenation.

6. They should be careful what they ask for.
I am sure when they see the list they won't want to publicize it.

7. Let the witch-hunt begin...
You would think that there are more important things to worry about, but when it comes to narrowminded bigots, I guess you would be wrong :(

8. Involuntary outing is wrong
But extremists of both sides advocate it. There are DU members who have said the very same thing.

9. In defense of the DUers "have said the very same thing"..
Regarding Perry.. It's the utter hypocrisy.. Probably no one cares whether he is gay or not, BUT he is in a position to affect legislation that affects many gay people's lives and liberty.. If he hates himself for being gay, that's HIS problem.. It crosses the line when he hurts other people because of his own hangups..

11. The West Wing
Had an interesting take on this subject about why a gay representative worked with the other party. The upshot was, he agreed with them a lot more than us.

Not all black people think the same. Not all gay people think the same. To try to abuse people for their sexual preference is wrong, no matter how good the reason.

parties because of an overall confluence of political and economic values. Further, those shift over time. The ones of either major party who expect lockstep adherence to a platform become unhappy campers.

And those who go third party wind up being completely on the outside, with no influence at all.

14. Maybe we should out the closet neocons in return
I would not be surprised to hear that my own church is part of this nonsense, since I go to hubby's conservative fmaily church instead of a more accepting one.

16. "You shall not bear false witness."
What part of the Ninth Commandment does the Maine "Christian" League not understand? They are soliciting "tips, rumors, and speculation." Blatant hypocrisy.
