Police Secretly Watching Hip-Hop Celebs

MIAMI - Police say they are secretly monitoring hip-hop stars P. Diddy, DMX and others in South Florida to protect them, but celebrities and critics see the surveillance as unnecessary and racist.

Officers in Miami and Miami Beach have photographed rappers and their entourages at Miami International Airport and staked out hotels, video shoots and nightclubs while consulting 6-inch-thick dossiers of rappers and associates with arrest records in New York state, The Miami Herald reported.

"We have to keep an eye on these rivalries," said Assistant Miami Beach Police Chief Charles Press. "The last thing we need in this city is violence."

Some experts believe the sweeping surveillance of a genre of musicians is unprecedented.

"There's been no shortage of rock stars and other musicians" scrutinized by police, said Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine. "But there has never been anything like this."

1. Racism may be a part of it yes, but...
It's also political....if these folks were all good supporters of Jebbie or Dub, I'm sure they'd have considerably less time, personnel and money wasted on "watching" them...recall that, to both Shrubs, "our criminals" are always "good criminals"! :eyes:

B-)

3. Voting
I know P. Diddy is working on getting out the vote with Simmons. So yes I see it as politics. I don't know about DMX.
Course, the police in Florida where intimidating black voters that where going to the polls in the 2000 election so I don't put anything past them.

5. Remember the huge police presence at the recent protests?
Several million from the Iraq reconstruction funds to provide security. This is scary, and it is out of control. Miami seems to be undergoing some transition or power struggle, or else my mind is working overtime.

9. last weekend there was
a somewhat confrontational 'meeting' of anti-gay fundies and pro gay rights folks here. I noticed the sheriff's dept. has as a new unit, different uniforms, they were dispersed among the regular police.
