Internet Providers Sue Hundreds Over Unsolicited E-Mail

Four major Internet providers said today they filed a series of lawsuits meant to shut down some major senders of unsolicited junk e-mail known as spam. The suits are among the first to invoke the federal Can-Spam Act, which went into effect on Jan. 1.

So far the law has not done anything to stem the torrents of spam. In February, 62 percent of all e-mail was spam, according to Brightmail, an e-mail filter company. That is up from 58 percent in December.

The four companies — America Online, Earthlink, Yahoo and Microsoft — each filed suits in federal courts in their home states against separate groups of people and companies they say are sending spam.

"We are trying to find the biggest, the baddest and the most notorious," said Randall Boe, the General Counsel of America Online. "When we work together it helps us find the most high impact defendants."

Thanks for posting. I was just on my way to check the spam filters on my various accounts.

For several weeks now, I've been getting way less spam.

Seven in the last 24 hours compared to about 50 on typical recent days.

Sounds like AOL, EarthLink, Yahoo!, and Microsoft may have chosen their targets well.

I did get one today, with the subject line "edible losable."

What's spam? Seriously, bellsouth is my ISP and I haven't gotten any spam, except for two that I can remember, and both came from personal e-mail addresses. Bellsouth has excellent filters for both spam and e-mail viruses. Geez, I sound like I work for them. I don't, but I've been very pleased with their filters.

just checked. Only one for ViargRia (as they spell it) and one for online prescriptions. Down from the usual 20 or so.

And not ONE penis-enlarging offer!
