Wasn't the Patriot Act meant to be used to fight Terrorism? Why then...
Is JP Morgan "facing the heat of the Patriot act". If they're money laundering then they should be caught. But I keep hearing officials say that the act is meant to fight terrorists, not to infringe on people's liberties. If they're using it on JP in a case that has nothing to due with terrorism then are they wire tapping in new unconstitutional ways and then saying they only use those powers to fight terrorists?

I know I sound vague but, this seems odd to me.

3. DOJ has sent people out to train municipal police forces how to use it
for basic police work

Patriot Act is not to fight terrorism. Terrorism is used as a ruse to fight citizens with opposing views from exercising Constitutional rights. Patriot Act is merely the vehicle to fight people.

Premptive war, vast oil deposits, control over our lives - domination, fueled by frothing hardcore "christian" fundamentalism. They hated the Taliban because they want to be like them. Kind of makes "they hate us for our freedoms" sound like "we hate them because they give their people less freedom - we want to do that to!"

11. Just one of the reasons I'm having a hard time with Kerry
He voted for the Patriot Act. The other is the fact that he too is opposed to Gay Marriage. I hope he beats Shrub, but I wish a different candidate (Dean) would be the one to do it.

and i am willing to admit that.

but the same could be said now accept in reverse...

he can make himself out to sound VERY patriotic AND at the same time HARSH on TERRORIST!

he could something like 'every freedom lost is a terrorist win, and that will be my yardstick for success in our nations ongoing WAR ON TERRORISM' point out that even rummy doesn't have a yard stick yet to measure victory ;->

Rumsfeld’s Memo
Editorial
October 2003

Perhaps the most important issue that Rumsfeld raises in his memo is the issue of how we measure success in the war on terrorism. If we cannot measure our success, then we cannot know if our strategy to win the war is working. If we adopt the wrong measure of success, then we can think we are winning even when we are not. For example, in Vietnam, our measure of success for much of the war was body count, how many of the enemy we killed. But this was a bad measure of success. We could not kill the enemy faster than the enemy could replace those we killed. Thus, killing the enemy could never lead to success.

15. The Constitution was meant to be the bars to hold the beast of Government,
to cage it from having complete control over the people, because We Are The Masters. But Governments have always tried to take more and more of the power. We must keep making those bars stronger! Bush, Ashcroft and gang are using Bills to weaken and finally break the cage and when they finally break the Constitution, they will devour us! Was it B. Franklin, when asked what form of Government they had given us, said "A Republic, if you can keep it!"? The Bill of Rights are our papers of Freedom, telling this monster what our minimum Rights are. (Think of them as whips, to keep the monster within it's cage)! This is how I explained our form of government to my children. Made them understand it easily!

When has the government ever not used the tools they give themselves? After the great Earthquake in SF they gave us a 1/4% tax to pay for the destruction. It was only for that and had a limited time. Did it disappear? NO!

We must stand up even for those we do not agree with. When they use these on others, even those who are doing something we don't approve of, we must stand up and yell NO MORE!
