How many Log Cabiners are there?
Beats me. You won't find the number anywhere on their website. So I emailed them and asked. Here was the response:

***********
We respect the privacy of our members across the country therefore that number is not public. You can see that we have chapters around the country.

Dwight Lodge
Chief Operating Officer
Log Cabin Republicans
1607 17th Street, N.W.
Washington, DC 20009

***********

Must be an embarrassingly low number. Are there ANY such organizations that hide the number of members they have? How would releasing such a number violate anybody's privacy?

Methinks there's a few hundred, tops.

1. That's too funny.
I know that at the LA pride events they have about 3 or 4 people at their booths.

2. even funnier
is that I got a response from the COO 11 minutes after I sent my email.

I guess he's not too busy.

5. I worked at a LA Pride event a few years ago...
and noticed that nobody seemed to want to go near their booth. In fact, I'm almost shocked that nobody tried to start it on fire.

4. I know I've heard that there are roughly 1 milion Log Cabins.
NYT, CNN have used that statistic.

6. No way
they claim that 1 million gay voters voted for Bush in 2000. I don't believe that statistic.

Believe me, if they had a million members, it would be prominently displayed on their website.

I still maintain it's a few hundred.

7. I wish I thought you were right. Yeah, a million is high, but...
...really doubt it's just "a few hundred." You're apt to find big groups in cities like Dallas and Atlanta, and a good-sized scattering in lots of rural areas (like mine...)

I "belong" to three informal social groups of gay men in this smalltown area; I hear conservative gay talk all the time...

I find it easy to believe that 25% of gay men voted for Bush. For too many guys, once they're older and successful, they stop worrying about anything but their own taxes...

8. I was able to find one reference
to the California chapter. It said there were 400 members, and presumably, that would be the largest in the country.

Maybe a couple thousand members at the very highest.

9. LOL - update
I asked him what privacy would be violated by telling me the number. He replied with:

"Why does it matter to you the size of our organization?"

It was very hard to resist the temptation to say "Cuz I'm a size queen".

Everyone should email him and ask him how many LCR members they have. Find out what they're hiding. dlodge@logcabin.org

11. When I lived close to DC in the 80s and 90s, the Washington Blade used to
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 07:56 PM by kayell
list attendance at different events including LC meetings in DC. The numbers were always around 15 to 20.

Here is an talk that should have gathered in quite a crowd.
http://www.lcrca.com/pressrelease2001/051101b.htm
"Scott Evertz, the openly Gay director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, told a gathering of nearly 150 members and guests of the Log Cabin Republicans"

I think that's pretty sorry attndence for an event in 2001 right after their boy king had assumed power, and DC was presumably flooded with lots of fresh young gay republicans ready to change the world. *snicker*

Added: And in retrospect you've really got to appreciate the irony in this story:

"Evertz said that, to his amazement, Bush switched gears briefly during the Oval Office meeting to talk about how he did among Gay voters in the 2000 presidential election.

"He said, 'I did pretty well in the Gay community, didn't I?' I said, 'Yes, Mr. President, you got a million votes, 25 percent of the Gay vote.' And he said, 'Yea.' He had that look on his face and that glee in his eyes.""
