Need specifics on Bush corruption

Who wants to be a research grunt?

I'm doing a column on corruption and the Bush administration and would like to work in specific examples of domestic policies that were clearly designed for no other purpose than to fatten the coffers of a particular industry. Have already mentioned Cheney's energy policy and will obviously bring in the tax cuts. Can anyone point me to stories that detail specific examples of this kind of perfidy?

Clean Air:

In February 2002, the Bush administration announced
its “Clear Skies” initiative, a plan to promote a “cap and
trade” program that would achieve limited reductions of
sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and mercury by the electric
utility industry. Despite the optimistic title, environmentalists,
public health officials and state and local air
pollution control agencies charged that the plan would,
in fact, repeal and weaken public health protections of
the current Clean Air Act, while replacing them with standards
that are at best deferred and incomplete.

By substituting existing air pollution reduction requirements
with a new emissions trading system and allowing
companies a longer time to comply with reductions, the
Clear Skies program would actually allow individual facilities
to boost their polluting emissions. In addition,
according to EPA estimates, the plan would have the effect
of raising the amount of coal burned by power companies—
a 79-million-ton increase in coal use over the
next 20 years—potentially generating 50 percent more
sulfur emissions and delaying by up to 10 years major
cuts in sulfur emissions required by the Clean Air Act.

The Clear Skies plan would also generate millions
more tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides and allow
three times more mercury emissions than current law.
(See box below.) According to the Natural Resources
Defense Council, this higher pollutant load could result
in 12,000 more premature deaths each year from 2008
to 2018, compared with effective enforcement of current
law and stronger pending bills, and, over the same
time period, could lead to additional annual health damages
of nearly $115 billion.

has very little benefit to Seniors, but with the "No Negotiation" clause, this bill is pure pork for the drug industry.

He put them in place when it was politically expedient, reversed them when they weren't and no one said a word about his flip-flopping.

that's where it all started. Followed by the seizing of private land in Texas to build a stadium (which he profited from) and then the promotion of his cronies to immense positions of power....

But you probably want to spend most of your time outside of Texas.

How about when he told the Medicare manger if he didn't lie about how much the drug benefit would cost he would lose his job? Or how the congressman was first tempted with a bribe then threatened if he didn't go along with the vote?

Or the way he allowed anti-mercury/vaccination lawsuits to be banned (same bill, I think)

we could go on and on--I think Molly Ivins Bushwhacked is a good source on the Texas crimes.

Bush ignores the needs of 45 million Americans, mostly women and children, who

cannot afford health insurance and has presided over more foreclosures than any other president in U.S. history. Recently, he relaxed rules that require hospitals to examine and treat people who require emergency medical care regardless of their ability to pay, making it easy for hospitals to turn away anyone who is uninsured.

Bush had Cheney craft an energy bill that entirely failed to address America?s strategic need to become energy independent but does provide $18.7 in tax breaks to the full array of Republican-run energy companies. Fortunately, the bill, crafted by Cheney in collusion with representatives of the energy industry, failed to win Senate approval. Amongst other things, the Bush/Cheney energy bill provides no scientific basis for the continuing expansion of fossil and nuclear fuel supplies; it also fails to address the potential for energy efficiency from renewable energy sources, and fails to provide incentives for the development of energy-efficient technologies.

59. Bush Friends Stuff their Pockets with War Profits:

Bush has created numerous opportunities for Republican-run companies to profit from his disastrous pre-emptive war policy. An example of Republican war profiteering is Halliburton (Cheney?s old company), which charges the U.S. Army in Iraq nearly $2.64 a gallon for gas that they could purchase from Iraqis for five to ten cents a gallon. Early government audits have already uncovered about $70 million in overcharges.

No child left behind with its mandated testing, testing, and more testing program is a boon to those who write and publish tests. I don't have links and don't have time to do the research, but I remember reading in the Nation (I think) that the Washington Post company owns one of the largest test production companies. Can anybody say conflict of interest? This may help explain why the WP has been such a lapdog. And of course, don't forget brother Neil Bush who started a test company, and I believe his company was awarded the contract for the entire state of ... (can you guess...drum roll) that's right: Florida.

If I recall correctly, Bush contributors were buying up wildnerness areas for development, I think through auction. Perhaps you can find the article on the website:

Environmental groups say the plan is healthiest, not for the forests and communities affected by wildfires, but for the timber companies that would be permitted to thin the forests. Some criticisms leveled against the "Health Forests" plan:

*The plan does not put enough emphasis on protecting residents from immediate risks.

*Increased logging called for in the plan could actually worsen the problem of forest fires.
