'Homeland'
what is the origin of this term ?

i'm sure it comes from some right-wing foreign policy screed or maybe even from a science fiction film, it could even have a hidden Trotskyite meaning for all i know

merci

3. It comes from Song of the Americans
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 09:10 PM by Walt Starr
America, America above all
Above everything in the world
When it always, for protection and defense
Stands together brotherly.
From the mountains to the seaside
From Maine to Oregon,
America, America above all
Above all in the world!
American women, American fidelity,
American beer and American song,
Shall retain in this the world,
Their old and high regard,
To inspire us to noble deeds
For the length of our lives.
American women, American fidelity,
American beer and American song.

Unity and justice and freedom
For the American Homeland
For this let us all strive
Brotherly, with heart and hand.
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune.
Blossom in the splendour of this blessing
Blossom American Homeland.

11. You can find it here

I may have gotten a few of the words mixed up, though.

13. WOW, a verse has been added to Song of the Americans!
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 09:37 PM by Walt Starr
I didn't know it, but a fourth verse has been added to this song, apparently right after 9/11!

America, America above all
Even more so now in our misfortune!
Only in misfortune one can tell,
If love is true and real
Thus, it shall continue to resound
From Generation to Generation:
America, America over all
Even more so now in our misfortune!

4. Better Alternatives: "Homefront" (if you must) or "Domestic"
this "Homeland" shit just sounds too much like Germany's "fatherland" or the Soviet "motherland".

I'm sure it was intentional.

5. My guess is that "Fatherland" came across a little strong even
for the people they polled.

8. "Homeland" is quite literally the gender neutral form
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 09:18 PM by Walt Starr
of both "Fatherland" and "Motherland".

In German and Russian, all nouns are assigned a gender. "Germany" in German is masculine, hence "Fatherland". "Russia" in Russian is feminine, hence "Motherland".

English assigns no gender to nouns, so "America" in English is gender neutral, hence "Homeland".

6. Roget's?
"National" seems so much more clear. "Homeland" is kind of scarily sentimental. Reminds me of the mood we were in right after 9/11.

9. Yeah..
It reeks of Germany 1937. Das Homeland, Seig heil, BushYouth, etc.

Had the sodomy law been upheld, I wouldn't put it past them to renew efforts on rounding-up "the sodomites" for jail time..

14. Homeland is where the immigrants came from.
We NEVER refer to our country as our homeland. "This is my country land of the free" and all that. We say "country." The people who comprise this nation come from a vast variety of homelands.

Homeland is an eerily imperial term. It implies that we have other lands as well.

My thought was, until I heard that the PNAC people have been using "homeland" for years because of their world domination fantasies, was that Bush wanted to say "heartland" but he'd already been quite clear that only red states were included in that description.

15. major creeps
homeland: sinister, Pynchon-esque in its absurdity

it must have a very specific origin though, just as 'shock and awe' and 'coalition of the willing' do

16. The appeal is visceral
It hit's the masses in the gut, just like 9/11 did. It prepares the way for acceptance of things that would have beenj unthinkable a decade ago.
