MUST READ: Fundie Kelley from USA Today
You must go to Atrios's blog and read about Kelley, the journalist who was just fired from USA Today. He (and some other prominent journalists) are part of an organization (link below) that promotes the Christian worldview from within major media organizations. Kelley seems to have been motivated to lie by his desire to promote certain Christian themes. Read all the comments, too. I learned there that it was Christian Fundamentalists who got the Hubble Space Telescope canned because it was causing too many problems for their Creationism lies!!!

This group has "reporters" in a lot of major news sources. What is the likely hood that could happen with out some arm pulling? Also, should we be watching all of them now?

3. This happened in Dayton back in 1988...caused a BIG stink.
...I had just moved here, it was an eyeopner what a right-wing cesspool this town is.

The publisher of the Dayton Daily News (major local daily, owned by Cox Media) was this fundy xtian and was pushing his views on the paper.

A local gay group wanted to run an ad in the classified ads to run a safe sex seminar for gays, and he refused to run it.

Then this gay activist jumped in and had a small rally outside of the paper, which resulted this straight AIDS activitst (mother of some guy who died of AIDS) confront the fundy publisher, and he also had a friend videotape the confrontation....and then sent the video to Cox corporate HQ down in Atlanta.

Cox fired the publisher, who went on to work for the Moody Bible institue.

When the fundy publisher was fired Dayton just went wild. The fundsy just exploded in rage...tons of letters to the editor, local talk radio flooded, big rally in front of the Dayton Daily News building.

But the fundy stayed fired, and the DDN has become a rare voice for gay rights in this resolutely homophobic area.

So, yeah, I can believe there is a fundy underground in media.

8. Hey, thanks. I lived there for 25 years and remember that time.
The Dayton Daily News seems to be a good paper these days, certainly preferable to the right-wing rag we have here in Knoxville.

4. "presuppositional reporting" is, I assume, to presuppose, i.e. slant
a story on preconceived set of beliefs. I know they are un- apologetic about it all, but this is not journalism and it's not reporting, it proselytizing.

6. Fundys
the assembliues of gawd(asscrack's denomination btw),as well as pleny of other pentacostal, baptist,or fundy churches are open to it's congregants about the church's desire to"infiltrate" secular media, public schools, popular music,.Just about any public space or modicum of communication/art and infect it with bible thumping theocratic, repuke,
reconstructionist,dominionist fundy crap.
Shit even the Assemblies of God have little bible home study groups they call"cell churches" where they do home excorcisms and sit around pray and the group leaders fuck with your psychology.
All the churches seek 'talented' musicians, artists, speakers writers ,hell, anyone who can sell it to be a propaganda machine. The churches they'll flatter you, bribe you, make you feel special, maybe help pay for stuff, offer the church as rehersal space, anything to have someone new who might be slick enough to woo the public into the web of lies and manipulation these highly pressured emotional and very profitable churches are with thier zingy tuned, rythmic hynotic, brain numbing, misleading, bible twisted, manipulative bad news..

Antifreeze tastes sweet, but drinking it will kill you.
So,I won't drink anti freeze or go to any organized churches to find my spirituality. It's between me and spirit like it always has been. I don't like being manipulated or conned,no matter how sweet the tunes sound or if the pastor say he cares about me in a sweet way.
Fundy churches are spiritually abusive mind and heart poison. I found out about sweet poison the hard way,I am an ex fundy.

9. Atrios is doing a SUPERB job on this story.
I have a feeling this story is going to get even bigger. Good timing, too, since Bush wantes to make religion part of the election. I hope more papers become uncomfortable.

The World Journalism Insitute and World Magazine are based in Asheville, NC and run by Bob Jones, IV of - you guessed it - Bob Jones University fame. Need I say more?
