This board is turning into trivial pursuit. I have to wade through this shit to get to a topic of relevance. People, if you are interested in this shit just go stay in the lounge or find a chat line somewhere.

I also think we waste way too much time making up phoney issues to argue about. We construct way to many boogiemen to be worried about. We love tearing each other down just as much if not more that Bush simply because someone doesn't share our viewpoint.

It's about rape, not just fucking. People on both sides of that particular issue feel very strongly about it, as evinced by the multitude of responses.

Apparently not so much so to others. Would you prefer another another "(fill in the blank) cannot possibly win" or "I hate Bush" thread?

It's not like the board is ill designed to make a person wade through 500+ responses to a single thread to get to the next one. If the topic doesn't interest me, I just don't click on it.

I haven't even opened that thread. As I have seen it grow I am all the less interested in it. I don't understand the whining about threads folks don't like. Don't like it, don't read it. Easy.

I agree that we have our share of silliness on DU, but I don't think discussions about rape are silly.

What else don't you think is worthy so we can avoid subjects that irritate your greatness?

Amazing solution, isn't it? Surprised no one's come up with it before. But, since you don't think trivial issues like rape are really all that important, maybe we should have Skinner make you decide what threads we should all read and what we should ignore. This thread is about rape laws and potential changes to them. The definition of rape and of consent may have come into the public consience, of late, because of a sensationalized case (Kobe Bryant) but this is clearly is an issue of importance.

How, in God's name, could you view a discussion on a change in law regarding a heinous crime (and one with politacal implications concerning the equality of and violence toward, women in our society) and find it trivial?

it is about fucking until the law is passed that "you can say no after copulation begins" and that if you say no and your partner doesn't stop that your partner is a rapist, THEN it is rape.

See...it wasn't about rape or fucking after all...it was mostly about men with a hearing disability where the word NO is concerned.

Frankly, I think someone calling RAPE "fucking" is about as sexist as language can get but I won't hold my breath waiting for it to be interpreted as such.

rape is a joke. The fact that lines are sometimes blurry so folks don't get when rape is rape... no big deal... more important things to think about. Perhaps this attitude is why the incident of rape is so incredibly high (and underreported) in this country? If you still think it is something to make light of... would you like me to elucidate some of the more "enlightened" thread topics and discussions around rape that I have read here, on this progressive site, over the past two years? I would rather not have to repeat the highlights - but if you really need it - I could give a summary.

That thread was atrocious. I was glad it was finally shut down. That is not to say that the general topic does not merit discussion. It does. And while most DUers demonstrate a great deal of maturity around the topic, there are some who don't. Dismissing the topic of rape, while not overly common (in terms of the majority of posters), does happen from time to time here at Du.

Sorta like this thread, for example. It won't make the egregious list, but it certainly does exemplify the dismissiveness.

Relating discussions of rape to trivial pursuit - when it is still and exceptionally common crime in this country... well it is telling.

Hey all you rape survivors.. talking about anything related to your situation.. go play a milton bradley game... its a better use of our time.
