9/11 Commission hearings gavel to gavel c-span beg. 9 AM
I plan on having it on all day, and I hope they will broadcast them tomorrow as well.

Both days should be interesting, but tomorrow should be VERY INTERESTING with Clarke to end the day.

I was pretty young at the time of Watergate and didn't pay much attention, but I do remember John Dean dropping a bombshell at the hearings.

I wonder if Clarke's testimony is going to fall into that category this time?

1. Well, if * is defeated, it appears that it is some loyal Republican
Americans and a Democratic Governor, and a Democratic Congressman who actually led the charge. Scott Ritter, Howard Dean, Paul O'Neill, Kevin Phillips, Dennis Kucinich and now Richard Clarke. The most damning testimony has come from the Republicans which may be obvious because they can't be charged with having an axe to grind.

It is refreshing to know that we have true patriots who love their country over a political party.

Bartcop is right, though. The Dems have pretty much failed us in this endeavour (with some notable exceptions).

9-11 Commission Hearings

Pacifica Radio will broadcast live from Capitol Hill the September 11 Commission hearings into Terrorist Attacks on the United States Tuesday and Wednesday, March 23 and 24th. The witness list, just announced, includes Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, George Tenet, Madeline Albright, and many other present and former government officials.

For the first time in public, the Commission says it will examine what the Bush administration knew and did leading up to 9/11.

The broadcasts will begin at 5:30 a.m. PST and last until conclusion.

Pacifica's National Affairs Correspondent, Larry Bensky, will anchor the hearings from Capitol Hill.

43. Class Act Madeline!
I admire her so much.

I loved her opening remarks. She is so compassionate and you could feel how she handled her job with energy AND compassion.

She went directly to the terrorist site in Africa ---and brought the American bodies home!

Did I hear that right? Did she do what Powell has never tried to do,show absolute compassion for brave Americans who gave their lives for our country.

She is smooth and talks openly and honestly IMO.
The pin is just awesome and is worn with such dignity. She makes me proud again to be an American.

32. Richard Armitage to replace Rice before the Commission
<snip>
Scheduled to testify Wednesday are CIA director George Tenet; Rice's predecessor, Clinton national security adviser Sandy Berger; and a new witness added Tuesday to fill Rice's slot, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. On that day, the panel will review intelligence and national policy coordination.

Armitage has a history of lying to congress
Back when Reagan's boys were on their crime spree ala Iran Contra, Armitage lied under oath while testifying before congress.

Senator (?) Eagleberger caught him in his lie and said to Armitage something like "that's slammer time, sir."

I have the exchange between the two somewhere. If I find it, I'll add it to this thread.

Armitage is a skunk. A lying stinky skunk.

Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 11:26 AM by MetaTrope
I never knew that. This is like Iran/Contra 2004.

http://independence.net/irancontra/

Contrary to their testimony to the presidentially appointed Tower Commission and the Select Iran/contra Committees of Congress, Independent Counsel determined that Secretary Weinberger and his closest aides were consistently informed of proposed and actual arms shipments to Iran during 1985 and 1986. The key evidence was handwritten notes of Weinberger, which he deliberately withheld from Congress and the OIC until they were discovered by Independent Counsel in late 1991. The Weinberger daily diary notes and notes of significant White House and other meetings contained highly relevant, contemporaneous information that resolved many questions left unanswered in early investigations.

The notes demonstrated that Weinberger's early testimony -- that he had only vague and generalized information about Iran arms sales in 1985 -- was false, and that he in fact had detailed information on the proposed arms sales and the actual deliveries. The notes also revealed that Gen. Colin Powell, Weinberger's senior military aide, and Richard L. Armitage, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, also had detailed knowledge of the 1985 shipments from Israeli stocks. Armitage and Powell had testified that they did not learn of the November 1985 HAWK missile shipment until 1986.

So Powell's under oath again today...so what?

this is awful--it is as if they are investigating 9-11 as the fault of Clinton. This is a highly political committee. They are out for Clinton's blood or any one else they think they can blame the tragedy that is Bush, on.

Indeed there was widespread outrage when Clinton not only deployed military forces but when he dared set foot on a military base...add in "wag the dog" accusaitons.

I want somebody to ask whether the FBI was asked to halt their oversight of Saudis in the US suspected of being terrorists.

I want somebody to ask what they did with the recommendations of the Hart-Rudman report before 9/11, if anything.

Shrub didn't write that letter. "...Pakistan is a country with which we hope to..." -- that's much too grammatically correct to be the writing of a chimp. The "concerns" about the Taliban was probably more about getting their pipeline through Afghanistan than about Al Qaeda.

Actually, they let him try the first draft of the letter, but because it began by asking Musharaf if he wanted to be penpals, they turned the job over to Condi...

This is unbelievable. He's sending up a snowstorm of bullshit, making inaction sound like action. For example, he listed a number of key players they incoming madministration "retained"... as though ignoring people in roles not considered immediately profitable for global corporatists was some kind of "action." The truth is they didn't give a shit. It was back-burnered in favor of "going for the gold." Even treating Graham-Rudman as toilet paper and superficially re-intiatating a whole new study was obfuscatory bullshit -- a delay while their energy and petrochemical buddies were splitting up the contents of the federal cookie jar.
